The Magellan was a Galactic Empire Imperial I-class Star Destroyer that its captain, Julias Narn, used to ensure security at the Imperial Lunar Station on the moon of the planet Danton VI. During the Galactic Civil War, a team of Rebel Alliance agents blackmailed Narn into assisting them with retrieving hijacked supplies and captured Rebel personnel from Galderian enslavers operating in Danton VI's star system. After he had invited the Rebels onboard the Magellan in order to formulate a strategy for their joint mission, Narn used the Star Destroyer to engage in combat the Galderians' Space ARC battle cruiser and lure it away from their asteroid base while the Rebels infiltrated the facility.

Description

The Magellan[2] was an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer[3] that was a part of the navy of the Galactic Empire.[2] Manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards and measuring 1,600 meters in length,[1] it was armed with sixty Taim & Bak XX-9 heavy turbolasers, Borstel Galactic Defense NK-7 ion cannons, and Phylon Transport Q7 tractor beam projectors.[3] The Star Destroyer's complement included a wing of seventy-two TIE/ln space superiority starfighters.[2]

History

Guarding a party

Despite having little combat experience, the Imperial officer Julias Narn became captain of the Magellan due to his organizational abilities and his ability to command respect from his troops. Narn kept his family at the Imperial Lunar Station on the moon of the Trebodar system's planet Danton VI, and the presence of the Star Destroyer in the vicinity of the relatively lightly guarded facility deterred any security incidents.[2]

At one point during the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Narn was present at a reception he had organized at the Lunar Station for visiting dignitaries. While there, he was approached by a team of Alliance agents who blackmailed him into assisting them with retrieving hijacked antibiotics and supplies and liberating captured Rebel personnel from Galderian enslavers who were operating in the Trebodar system. The captain then invited the Rebels onboard the Magellan in order to plan their joint mission.[2]

After Narn's scout ships had located the enslavers' base, which was located on an asteroid in the system's asteroid cluster, the captain formulated a plan: the Magellan would draw away the Galderians' 1,000-meter–long Space ARC battle cruiser and engage it in combat while the Alliance team infiltrated the asteroid and retrieved the supplies and the captured Rebels. In the case where the supplies and the captives were instead situated aboard the battle cruiser, Narn would do his best to damage the enslavers' starship without destroying it—although privately, wary of the prospect of potentially liberating numerous enslaved alien crewmembers in the Trebodar system's sector, the captain intended to either destroy the warship or chase it out of the sector anyway.[2]

When their plan was set in motion, the Rebel agents observed from a distance the Magellan approaching the asteroid cluster. In order to lure the Space ARC away from the base, it sent two squadrons of TIE fighters toward it. The Galderians' capital ship subsequently returned fire, and eventually it and several squadrons of Galderian I-BEAM Star Fighters followed the Imperial warship away from the enslavers' asteroid, providing the Rebels with less than one hour to infiltrate the asteroid, complete their objective, and escape.[2]

Behind the scenes

The Magellan was introduced in Shadis 14.

The Magellan was introduced in Shadis 14.

The Magellan appeared in "Strange Bedfellows," a roleplaying adventure written by John Zinser and published in the JulyAugust 1994 fourteenth issue of the Shadis magazine for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. Since that adventure was released outside of the Lucas Licensing process,[2] it was considered non-canonical with respect to the Star Wars Legends continuity.[4] The adventure suggests that, depending on the outcome of the battle between the Magellan and the Space ARC battle cruiser, the Galderian warship can return to the enslavers' asteroid base, or, if the Star Destroyer prevails, Narn can demand that the player characters return to the Magellan for transportation back to Danton VI—a request that the player characters can ignore at the risk of earning the enmity of the captain. This article assumes that the adventure plays out as described.[2]

The Second Edition of the Imperial Sourcebook establishes that the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer had sixty turbolaser batteries, sixty ion cannons, and ten tractor beam projectors—specifically Taim & Bak XX-9 heavy turbolasers, Borstel Galactic Defense NK-7 ion cannons, and Phylon Transport Q7 tractor beam projectors per Star Wars: The Official Starships & Vehicles Collection 5 In Command: Imperial-class Star Destroyers—whereas the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, according to the Imperial Sourcebook and The Official Starships & Vehicles Collection 5, had only twenty ion cannons but also at least one hundred turbolasers. Therefore, the Magellan must have been Imperial I-class.
