"Thank you for making time to meet with me."
"Laid up for repairs as we are, I appreciate every opportunity to relieve the monotony."
―Lt. Commander Orson Krennic and Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin in the construction and overhaul facility over Kartoosh[4]

Kartoosh was an astronomical object in the Western Reaches and Narrant sector of the Mid Rim Territories. It was located along the Cerean Reach hyperspace route. The massive construction and overhaul facility was a shipyard stationed over Kartoosh that saw design work in 23 BBY. In the aftermath of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems, Kartoosh was left a devastated shell of itself, with a debris cloud of destroyed starships created in orbit around it.

Description

Located in the Western Reaches,[2] the astronomical object Kartoosh[4] was situated in the Kartoosh system in the Narrant sector of the Mid Rim Territories on grid square I-16 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] Through the Cerean Reach[3] hyperspace route, Kartoosh was connected to[5] the planets[6][7] Riflor and Cerea.[5] In the aftermath of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems, Kartoosh was devastated and orbited by a cloud of debris, which was made up of destroyed vessels and their contents.[4]

In 23 BBY,[8] a massive shipyard known as the construction and overhaul facility was being designed for establishment over Kartoosh, which Galactic Republic engineer Orson Callan Krennic helped to develop. The galaxy was then faced with the Clone Wars—a galaxy-spanning war between the Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems[4] that lasted from 22 BBY to 19 BBY[7]—until the advent of the Imperial Era. Kartoosh and its shipyard were left devastated by the time of the war's aftermath. A debris field originating from destroyed starships was left to orbit the astronomical object.[4]

Nevertheless, the newly formed Galactic Empire still made use of intact hangar bays in the ravaged overhaul facility. Former Separatist starships and other outdated craft, including Venator-class Star Destroyers, were retrofitted or dismantled above Kartoosh. Loading such armaments into transports, the facility also became a waypoint for war materiel and other arsenals destined for storage in faraway star systems. After the Empire launched a campaign against Separatist holdouts in the galaxy's Western Reaches, the construction and overhaul facility was available for usage as a repair facility for vessels damaged in the operation.[4]

In 18 BBY,[8] after taking damage in the Western Reaches campaign, Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin's Imperial-class Star Destroyer was sent to undergo repairs above Kartoosh, leaving Tarkin and his crew to wait out the monotony of repairs. At that same time, Krennic, now a Lieutenant Commander, made his way to Kartoosh for business on its surface. Leaving his main ship at one of the overhaul facility's longest docking extensions, Krennic made his way to the surface and completed his business. With that, he returned to the orbiting facility via a shuttle. Rather than immediately returning to his main ship, Krennic then had his pilot take him to Tarkin's Star Destroyer, where he had a meeting with the admiral about the status of a massive battle station project and watched the inaugural launch of a new dreadnought—which had been completed in less than a standard year yet was already regarded as a placeholder—intended for use in in the Imperial Navy.[4]

Locations

Kartoosh was orbited by the massive construction and overhaul facility, which saw heavy damage as the target of turbolasers and missiles. Nevertheless, its surviving hangar bays saw use into the Imperial Era.[4]

Behind the scenes

Kartoosh first appeared in the 2016 novel Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel by James Luceno.[4]
