- "Sure, he'll get here. I just hope we'll be here long enough to see him!"
- ―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono on meeting Poe Dameron
Hugh Sion was a human male pilot who flew for the New Republic Starfighter Corps in 34 ABY during the Cold War between the militant First Order and the New Republic. During the conflict, he joined fellow pilot Mia Gabon under the command of Kazuda Xiono on a mission to rendezvous with Commander Poe Dameron of the Resistance to deliver intelligence. After coming under attack by Major Elrik Vonreg of the First Order, Sion and Gabon managed to escape into hyperspace back to base while Xiono stayed behind to see the mission through, eventually being rescued from Vonreg by Dameron himself.
Sion went on to join the Resistance during the First Order-Resistance War, flying for Jade Squadron under Commander Venisa Doza. The squadron was allowed by Doza's husband, Captain Imanuel Doza of the supertanker fuel depot Colossus, to use his tanker as the launching point for a mission to the planet Dantooine to rescue Resistance recruits from the First Order-controlled world. Sion was reunited with Xiono on the tanker and introduced his friend to his new wingmate Norath Kev. Commander Doza briefed Sion and the rest of the squadron, including the newly added Hype Fazon, Torra Doza, and Xiono of Ace Squadron, in the Aces' Lounge aboard the Colossus.
The expanded squadron departed for Dantooine and was attacked by a scouting party of TIE/fo space superiority fighters, though Jade Squadron defeated the party and continued on their mission. While escorting the convoy of transports, the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Thunderer arrived, and First Order forces, including former Colossus residents Tamara Ryvora and Jace Rucklin, attacked Sion and the convoy. Ryvora managed to trail Xiono, but Sion damaged her fighter, and the two surviving shuttles—one having been destroyed—and Jade Squadron escaped back to the Colossus.
The Colossus travelled to the Barabesh system while evading the First Order, and Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager attempted to rescue Ryvora, as she had secretly expressed a desire to desert from the First Order. The trio was captured by First Order Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre and brought aboard the Thunderer, which travelled to the Barabesh system to destroy the Colossus. Captain Doza gathered the tanker's denizens, including Sion, and begged them to fight the First Order, and a hologram of Xiono and Ryvora moved them to action. Jade Squadron joined forces with Ace Squadron and launched from the Colossus under Commander Doza, and the combined forces targeted the Thunderer's engines. After several ineffective runs, the Star Destroyer's shields were disabled by the astromech droid CB-23, allowing the fighters to destroy the Thunderer as Xiono, Yeager, Ryvora, and CB-23 escaped. Sion and the other members of Jade Squadron returned to the Colossus and celebrated their victory at Aunt Z's Tavern.
Biography
New Republic service
- "Um, Kaz and I flew together back in the New Republic Navy."
- ―Hugh Sion introduces Kazuda Xiono to Norath Kev
Hugh Sion piloted a T-85 X-wing for the New Republic Starfighter Corps.
In 34 ABY,[6] during the Cold War between the First Order and the New Republic and its allies, the human Hugh Sion served as the pilot of a T-85 X-wing starfighter in the New Republic Defense Force's Starfighter Corps.[1] He,[3] along with fellow pilots Kazuda Xiono and Mia Gabon, was sent on a mission to rendezvous with Commander Poe Dameron of the Resistance to deliver intelligence.[1]
However, after arriving at the rendezvous point, the three pilots were ambushed by Major Elrik Vonreg of the First Order, and Sion and Gabon were concerned that the mission would fail. Xiono ordered the two pilots to flee into hyperspace while he covered them. Following Sion and Gabon's jump to hyperspace, Xiono's starfighter was struck by Vonreg, but the pilot was saved by Commander Dameron. Rather than returning to base, Xiono opted to join the Resistance,[1] causing Sion and Gabon to assume the worst.[4]
Flying under Jade Squadron
- "Hugh! Buddy! Oh, I can't believe it! You're a pilot for the Resistance now?"
"Yeah, sure am, if you can believe that." - ―Hugh Sion and Kazuda Xiono reunite aboard the Colossus
Sion and Xiono reunite aboard the Colossus.
Sion himself later joined the Resistance during the First Order-Resistance War, flying a T-70 X-wing starfighter for Jade Squadron under Commander Venisa Doza. Doza's husband, Captain Imanuel Doza of the Colossus, allowed them to travel to the supertanker fuel depot for a mission to escort Resistance recruits off the First Order-controlled planet Dantooine. Once aboard, Sion was reunited with Xiono when he spotted Xiono admiring the carbon scoring on his fighter. Sion introduced his former wingmate to fellow Jade Squadron member Norath Kev, who proceeded to explain that the squadron had been searching the galaxy for allies to stand against the First Order with mixed results, and with several members lost.[4]
After Captain Doza agreed to allow the squadron to temporarily house the Resistance recruits on the Colossus, Xiono and Torra Doza, daughter of Venisa and Imanuel, volunteered to assist with the mission. Venisa then recruited ace pilot Hype Fazon, who joined the squadron for a briefing in the Aces' Lounge, taking Sion's seat as he left to express his annoyance with Fazon's personality to Xiono. Venisa conducted her briefing, explaining the mission objectives: sneak onto Dantooine, evacuate the Resistance recruits, and avoid detection by the First Order. The pilots then proceeded to their fighters and left the Colossus for Dantooine.[4]
Mission to Dantooine
- "You got a shadow, Kaz. I'm on it."
"Whoo! Thanks for watching my back, Hugh." - ―Hugh Sion saves Kazuda Xiono from pursuit by Tamara Ryvora
Sion saves Xiono from Ryvora.
Upon approach to Dantooine, Sion explained to the rest of Jade Squadron that Xiono had nearly been thrown out of the New Republic Military Academy multiple times. Shortly after, the squadron was attacked by a scouting party of TIE/fo space superiority fighters. Commander Doza ordered their communications jammed, and Jade Squadron split into pairs. After defeating the entire scouting party, Venisa contacted the Resistance recruits on-planet, and the transports launched.[4]
As the squadron was escorting the convoy through Dantooine's atmosphere, the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer[4] Thunderer,[7] which had been alerted to Resistance activity on the planet, arrived. As the First Order forces—including Tamara Ryvora and Jace Rucklin,[4] both former residents of the Colossus[8]—approached, Venisa ordered Sion and Xiono to flank the enemy while she hit them head on. During the dogfight, Ryvora trailed Xiono, but Sion was able to damage her fighter, causing her to lose Xiono. Rucklin managed to take out one of the transports, but the remaining two escaped into hyperspace along with Jade Squadron. Upon returning to the Colossus, Sion conversed with Fazon, the other Aces, and a group of recruits.[4]
Escaping the First Order
- "All right, team, we're going for their engines. Jade Squadron, focus ion bombs on the panels near their thrusters. If we get close enough, we might have a chance of taking them out."
- ―Venisa Doza, to Sion and the rest of Jade Squadron
Jade and Ace Squadrons launch to defend the Colossus from the Thunderer.
Later that same year, the Colossus traveled to the Barabesh system while evading the First Order. Shortly after, Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager attempted a rescue of Ryvora after she expressed wanting to leave the First Order and return to the Colossus. The rescue attempt initially failed, however, and the trio was captured by the First Order's Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre and brought aboard the Thunderer, which headed to the Barabesh system to destroy the Colossus.[7] Imanuel gathered the denizens of the supertanker, including Sion, in Aunt Z's Tavern and pled with them to fight the First Order. Upon watching a hologram of Xiono and Ryvora begging them to flee, Sion and the rest of the citizens of the Colossus were moved to fight back.[5]
After the Thunderer—under the command of Tierny—arrived in the system, Jade Squadron, along with the Colossus's own Ace Squadron, launched to defend the tanker and attacked the Thunderer's engines, focusing their ion bombs on the panels adjacent to the ship's thrusters. After several ineffective runs, the astromech droid CB-23 managed to deactivate the Star Destroyer's shields from inside the ship, allowing Jade and Ace Squadrons to inflict damage on the engines. After a final pass with their proton torpedos, the fighters destroyed the engines, causing a chain reaction throughout the Thunderer and killing Tierny and Pyre shortly after Xiono, Yeager, Ryvora, and CB-23 escaped aboard an AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport. Sion and the other pilots rejoined with Kaz and the rest of the newly dubbed Team Colossus at Aunt Z's Tavern, celebrating their victory over the First Order.[5]
Personality and traits
- "Uh, what about you? I mean, last I saw, you were facing off against the red TIE, and...we assumed the worst."
- ―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono
Sion and the rest of Team Colossus celebrate their victory over the First Order.
Sion was a male[2] human with blue eyes, light skin, and brown hair. When Xiono failed to return to base after their mission to rendezvous with Dameron, Sion assumed the worst had happened, expressing concern in his voice when explaining his and Gabon's feelings about their friend's disappearance. Upon seeing Xiono admiring his beaten-up starfighter, the pilot jokingly scolded his friend for drooling on his ship. Sion expressed sorrow when explaining to Xiono that there were only a few members of Jade Squadron remaining. He also expressed annoyance when Fazon joined Jade Squadron in the Aces' Lounge and passively boasted about his piloting skills. During the flight to Dantooine, the pilot told the rest of the squadron Xiono had nearly been expelled from the Academy multiple times, finding humor in the story.[4] After the defeat of the Thunderer, Sion celebrated with the rest of Team Colossus.[5]
Skills and abilities
Sion was capable of piloting both T-85 and T-70 X-wing starfighters as a member of the New Republic Starfighter Corps and the Resistance, respectively.[1][4]
Equipment
- "Hey! No drooling on my ship."
- ―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono in jest
Sion flew a blue New Republic T-85 X-wing starfighter on his mission to rendezvous with Commander Dameron. While flying the X-wing, he wore a blue New Republic flight suit with the Sigil of the New Republic on the left shoulder and a helmet with a polarizing visor attached via a breathing tube.[1] As a pilot of Jade Squadron, Sion flew a gray Resistance T-70 X-wing starfighter with blue markings that was scarred with carbon scoring, and he wore an orange Resistance flight suit with a white helmet with green markings and a green Rebel Alliance starbird; black gloves, shoes, and belt; and a white flak vest.[4]
