"Why don't you come to the Irizi homestead with me?"
"To your homestead? Are strangers even allowed? Especially strangers from rival families?"
"I don't know, and I don't care. I'm blood, and I'm an honored member of the fleet who just helped save eight thousand lives. I don't know how far all that will take me, but I'd rather like to find out. You game to find out with me?"
Senior Captain Irizi'ar'alani to Senior Commander Mitth'raw'nuru[1]

A homestead was a type of structure and estate that was home to a Chiss family. Merit adoptives seeking to become Trial-born members of a family performed the Trials on a family homestead.[1]

Examples of homesteads included the Irizi family homestead and the Mitth family homestead; both located deep underground below the surface of Csaplar, the capital of Csilla.[1]

Description

Homesteads were the effective headquarters of a Chiss family, acting akin to a capital city for that family's official affairs. Each family maintained an Office of the Patriarch within their homestead.[2] When most of the population of Csilla emigrated due to the freezing of the planet, most of the Ruling Families of the Chiss Ascendancy chose to keep their homesteads on their ancestral lands of the Chiss homeworld. Nevertheless, most of the remaining population was relocated underground, and the homesteads were as well.[1]

In most cases of rematching, a prospective recruit on a given planet would have to interview several family Councilors and possibly the family Patriel of that planet. The Patriel and Councilors would then send a report to their family homestead, where officials would deliberate whether or not to admit that individual as a merit adoptive. This process typically took two to three months. However, in Thrawn's case, Mitth family Patriarch Mitth'oor'akiord directly circumvented these interviews to accept then-Vurawn as a merit adoptive of the Mitth.[1]

The Mitth family homestead was located in a cavern underneath that family's ancestral lands. It had mountains, forests, lakes, a mansion, and an artificial but real-looking sky with a sun. Atop one prominent mountain were memorial staffs commemorating the lives of notable members of the Mitth family.[1]
