A Patriel was a member of one of the Nine Ruling Families or Forty Great Families of the Chiss Ascendancy who managed the family's affairs on a planetary scale. Patriels were the fourth-highest political rank within a Ruling Family, ranking above Councilors and below Syndics.[1]
Patriels had the power to declare a family emergency, as well as authority over the planetary defense forces of their family. Patriels could delegate some of the patrol boats to their family's Councilors on the same planet for specific purposes.[2]
Upon the death of a family Patriarch, one of the roles of family Patriels was to choose a successor Patriarch along with the family Speaker. Typically, a Patriel was chosen as successor Patriarch.[2]
