- "This seal will grant you entry to my library, but only during the hours before curfew."
- ―Hanrai, to Yuehiro
The seal to Jedi lord Hanrai's private library was a carved green stone implement kept by Hanrai in his study at his home estate on the astronomical object Watoru. The seal granted sanctioned access to his library, and came into the possession of the Twi'lek Jedi apprentice Yuehiro following the disappearance of Master Numoda in the Engai system, when Hanrai entrusted it to the Twi'lek after catching him in the library after curfew investigating the vanishing of Numoda, as well as details of the Sith rebellion.
Description
The seal controlled access to Jedi lord Hanrai's private library at his home estate on the astronomical object Watoru. It was carved onto the end of a small green stone stick that Hanrai kept in a drawer in his study.[1]
History
- "Why are you giving this to me?"
"Because you don't trust your other masters. Because it seems you might learn to trust me, and you certainly trust yourself. And because I want you to become a Jedi, Yuehiro. So I don't want to hear any more about you skipping on sleep or drills either, am I understood?" - ―Yuehiro and Hanrai
After Master Numoda went missing in the Engai system, Hanrai's clanmember and Twi'lek Jedi apprentice Yuehiro snuck into Hanrai's private library after curfew to learn more about the circumstances of his disappearance, as well as details regarding the Sith rebellion. Yuehiro was discovered and brought to Hanrai's study, where the Jedi lord decided to hand the boy the seal to allow him proper entry to the library before curfew. Yuehiro picked it up as if the seal were a fragile item, and inquired his lord as to why he had entrusted the seal to him. Hanrai replied that he hoped it would help Yuehiro trust him, even if the Twi'lek did not trust his masters to tell him the truth. Hanrai's aide Masamu later questioned his lord's indulgence towards Yuehiro, which he justified as a useful tactic to learn when and what Yuehiro looked into in Hanrai's files.[1]
Behind the scenes
A Japanese stone seal
Hanrai's library seal appeared in the 2021 non-canon novel Ronin: A Visions Novel, by Emma Mieko Candon.[1] In Japan, seals, known as hanko (Japanese: 判子)[2] or inkan (Japanese: 印鑑)[3] are traditional stamps used to prove authenticity in various situations, in a similar way to signatures.[4]
