- "We're playing, sir. A game is far more than a matter of victory. To play is to uncover a corner of a grander puzzle—that which comprises the entirety of the game itself, its history and its potential. I've brought you not because I wish to win but because I seek to understand a greater whole."
- ―Hanrai, playing shogi with the Ronin
Hanrai was a male Jedi knight who became a Jedi lord after the planet Rei'izu disappeared in the wake of the Sith rebellion. He led his clan at his home estate on Watoru. As a Jedi, he was the master of numerous apprentices, including Yuehiro, Tsuden, and Ogara; however, his favored student was the individual who would later be known as the Traveler, formerly Idzuna.[1]
Personality and traits
Hanrai believed that people should be treated fairly, but only to the extent that it does not challenge the system, as he believed that cleaving to norms was a way to protect people. Hanrai was manipulative and akin to a politician. His gender identity corresponded to the male sex assigned at birth, and he was attracted to individuals of the opposite sex.[2]
Behind the scenes
Hanrai appeared in the 2021 non-canon novel Ronin: A Visions Novel, by Emma Mieko Candon.[1] Like all names in the novel, Hanrai's name is comprised of phonemes used in the Japanese language.[3] According to Candon, Hanrai was the only character in the novel deliberately conceived as cisgendered heterosexual, as he represents an "attempt to cleave to a norm." She described him as "neoliberal,"[4] "manipulative," and likened him to a politician.[2] Candon shared that it was difficult for her to write Hanrai as a straight man character who she also found interesting.[4]
