"What is it, Quin? Not ryll? Gy'lan? Filaxian? Come on. You can't kid an addict. We know all the signs."
"Reed."
―Tey Sirrek and Quin Carree[1]

Gy'lan was an addictive consumable available during the High Republic Era. While operating as a bounty hunter, the Bivall Quin Carree—who had been abandoned by her lover Twi'lek Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee[1] in 230 BBY[2]—became addicted to the substance reed.[1] In 228 BBY,[3] Dee—who at that point was also operating as a bounty hunter—encountered the Bivall and shot her, unaware it was actually Carree.[1]

Dee attempted to help heal the injuries Carree had suffered once she discovered it was her, but the Bivall began to struggle and stress she needed to return to her ship. After the Twi'lek refused to let her, the Sephi Tey Sirrek—an associate of Dee's—asked the Bivall about what she was using, listing gy'lan alongside[1] the spice[4] ryll, and the substance filaxian. When Carree began shivering in response, Sirrek pressed further, stating that they could recognize the signs of addiction. Eventually, the Bivall admitted she was taking reed.[1]

Behind the scenes

Gy'lan was mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in flashbacks in The High Republic: Tempest Breaker, a 2024 audio drama written by Cavan Scott and published as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[5] Phase III.[6] The spelling of the consumable's name was later confirmed with the release of the audio drama's script in 2025.[1] Gy'lan originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the 1994 The Last Command Sourcebook, written by Eric Trautmann for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[7]
