Gupins were a winged sentient species who at some point thought to have been introduced to the moon Endor on a crashed ark around a millennium before the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY. Shortly after the battle, a pair of Gupins visited the Ewok Bright Tree tribe in Bright Tree Village on Endor to share stories and work together.
Biology and appearance
Gupins[2] were a bipedal sentient species with two wings, each segmented into three sections and capable of allowing a Gupin to hover above the ground. Gupins' skin was brown in color and their faces were framed with a mane of hair that could be orange or brown in color.[1]
A Gupin's face included two eyes, a mouth, and a nose as well as two pointed ears that emerged through their hair. The species' legs ended in two-toed feet and their two arms ended in hands with three fingers and a thumb. The tail of a Gupin was long and curled, sometimes ending in a tuft of hair.[1]
History
- "The cruel ones came for greed but left unity behind. Word spread quickly. Soon, neighbors of all sorts gathered to meet, to share stories and to build the forest of the future—together."
- ―Wicket Wystri Warrick
Gupins attended a gathering in the Ewok Bright Tree Village.
Gupins were thought to have been introduced alongside goats and Teek to the forest moon Endor by a crashed ark around a millennium before the Battle of Endor[2] in 4 ABY.[3] Shortly after the battle, word spread across Endor that members of the Bright Tree tribe of Ewoks, including the Ewok Wicket Wystri Warrick, and their Yuzzum neighbors had seen off a group of Imperials who had returned to Endor seeking an Imperial weapons cache.[1]
This resulted in many of the tribe's neighbors visiting Bright Tree Village in order to meet the Ewoks and share stories with them while working together to decide the forest's future. At least two Gupins attended the gathering, one orange-haired Gupin wearing a blue outfit with green patterning and a brown-haired Gupin who wore a purple outfit and danced with an Ewok to music being played by a Yuzzum and the Ewok drummer[1] Brethupp.[4]
Behind the scenes
In the current canon, Gupins were introduced via Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon 38.
In the current Star Wars canon, Gupins were first mentioned in "Sentient Species of Endor," an article[2] written by Mark Newbold[5] in the "Guide to the Galaxy" department of the thirty-eighth issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine series,[2] which was published around September 23, 2015.[6] Gupins then appeared in the fourth issue of the 2024 Star Wars: Ewoks comic series. The issue was written by Steve Orlando, illustrated by Laura Braga and Álvaro López, and published by Marvel Comics[1] on January 29, 2025.[7]
Gupins originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in "To Save Deej,"[8] the fourth episode in the first season of the animated series Ewoks, which premiered on September 28, 1985.[9] The Gupins depicted in Ewoks (2024) 4[1] match the designs of the Gupins Mring-Mring[8] and Oobel from the Legends animated series,[10] although they have not yet been named in canon.[1]
