Guiji fire peppers were a type of pepper that was barely five centimeters in length and contained tiny red seeds. Edible to humans, consumption of condiment oil created with guiji fire peppers caused a fire-like sensation on one's tongue. Additionally, if they were consumed raw in excess, they could simulate the symptoms of the disease malongo pox, barring pus-filled blisters. During his tenure as a student of Reena University[1] around 396 BBY,[2] Axel Greylark utilized several guiji fire peppers in such a manner to get out of participating in the Queen's Bloom Festival, though his ruse did not fool the dean of student affairs, Ry Harket. After Harket departed from his quarters, Greylark pulled one of the pepper's seeds out of his mouth as the falsified symptoms began to fade.[1]
Behind the scenes
A seed of the guiji fire peppers appeared in "The Queen's Bloom," a short story in the 2023 anthology young-adult novel The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life, released as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]
