Fearsome traditional war masks were worn by Kaleesh warlord Qymaen jai Sheelal, later known as General Grievous. One was sculpted from the skull and bone of the Mumuu, one of Kalee's deadliest predatory beasts, while another was forged from the bones of an Erkush. Before battle, the mask would be smeared with Karabbac-blood war paint around its eye sockets.
Description
Grievous's Kaleesh masks[7] were carved from bone. One fearsome traditional war mask worn by Grievous was forged from of the skull and bone of Kalee's deadliest[1] predatory creatures, the mumuu.[8] Another one of his original masks[7] was carved out of Erkush bone.[9] The masks' teeth resembled those karabbac. Above Grievous's[1] slitted golden eyes,[10] the mask was smeared[8] with karabbac-blood war paint[1] before battle.[8]
History
General Grievous fashioned his cybernetic mask after his Kaleesh mask.
Decades before the Clone Wars,[1] the infamous warlord[11] Qymaen jai Sheelal,[12] known in time as Grievous,[13] donned a Kaleesh mask in battles, such as the struggle war between his people and the Yam'rii, until one day he suffered terrible injuries in a sabotage shuttle crash that nearly killed him,[14] destroying most[10] of what remained[15] of his original body.[10] When Grievous became the General of the Confederacy of Independent Systems,[16] he retained his homeworld's tradition and based his faceplate on the skull-like mask he once wore[1] as a feared warrior[17] and warlord.[18]
At some point, an Ithorian collector named Dok-Ondar[3] came into possession of an erkush-carved mask originally worn by the late General Grievous,[7] which was displayed in his Batuuan store, Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities in Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.[3] Years later, Resistance spy Vi Moradi, who was hiding from the First Order stormtroopers on Batuu, visited Dok-Ondar's store and noticed a mask that seemed promising, but realized it was a Kaleesh mask that would only draw attention to her.[19]
Behind the scenes
Grievous's masks first appeared as a background prop for the Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities store at the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge theme park land,[9] which opened to guests at Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2019,[20] Although its owner was not identified[9] until the 2020 reference book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu, written by Cole Horton, confirmed it to be Grievous's.[7]
Grievous's masks originally appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity in "The Eyes of Revolution," a comic story written and illustrated by Warren Fu, published in the Dark Horse Comics anthology Star Wars: Visionaries, released on April 2, 2005,[21] while mentioned in "Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous," an article written by Abel G. Peña and published in the eighty-sixth issue of Star Wars Insider,[22] published on February 13, 2006.[23]
