During the Clone Wars, a Munificent-class star frigate served in the naval forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and was used by Kaleesh Separatist General Grievous. Following the destruction of his previous Munificent-class star frigate at the Battle of Bothawui, in 22 BBY, Grievous used the new Munificent alongside another in an ambush on Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker during the Jedi's mission to sweep an outer corridor of suspected Separatist space. However, Skywalker managed to escape Grievous and his Munificent.

Description

A 825-meter long, 426-meter wide, and 243-meter tall[2] Munificent-class star frigate, the vessel was equipped with a port side hangar bay that carried its complement of Vulture-class droid starfighters, hyperdrive generator,[1] seven ion drive thrusters[3] and two long-range hyperwave transceiver masts.[6] The Munificent was also armed with two heavy turbolaser cannons, two long-range heavy ion cannons,[4] and thirty-four port and starboard twin light turbolaser cannons.[5] On either side of its hull, the frigate featured the emblem of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[1]

History

Sometime after the Battle of Bothawui in 22 BBY,[7] during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker traveled to an outer corridor of suspected Separatist space. Upon exiting hyperspace in the outer corridor, Skywalker ordered his astromech droid, R3-S6, who was secretly a Separatist spy working for the Kaleesh cyborg General Grievous, to activate his starfighter's long-range scanners, however, the droid instead activated the fighter's tracking beacon. The signal soon alerted Grievous and two Munificent-class star frigates to Skywalker's location, and Skywalker then proceeded to order R3-S6 to prepare to jump to hyperspace, but the droid detached the fighter from the hyperspace ring which was then destroyed by enemy fire, negating their chance to escape.[1]

Grievous then gave orders to launch everything they had at Skywalker, to the confusion of a battle droid who thought it overkill for one fighter that couldn't escape but who obliged when Grievous reiterated the order. A large number of Vulture droid starfighters attacked the Jedi and though Skywalker was able to destroy them with his fighter's blaster cannons, R3 then disabled them along with the engines, allowing for more Vulture droids to swarm the immobile Jedi starfighter. However, Skywalker was saved by his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Clone Captain CT-7567, nicknamed "Rex," in the G9 Rigger-class light freighter Twilight, having also picked up the tracking beacon and come to the rescue. R3 reactivated the engines and Skywalker was able to pilot his fighter into the cargo hold of the Twilight whilst it engaged the remaining vulture droids. Grievous then ordered his frigate and the other one to move in close to each other in order to block the Twilight's escape, but the freighter was able to slip between them and jump to hyperspace whilst the frigates themselves collided, leaving Grievous with two damaged vessels and furious at the Republic forces' escape.[1]

Behind the scenes

This Munificent-class star frigate appeared in "Downfall of a Droid,"[1] the sixth episode of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season, which originally aired on November 7, 2008.[8]
