The Gree were a little-known alien species[3] with tentacles who were native to the Gree system[2] of the Gree Enclave[1] in the Outer Rim Territories.[4] They also shared their name[5] with the Outer Rim astronomical object Gree.[6] Like the Aing-Tii, the Gree exhibited neural activity that greatly resembled the motion and reactions of the plasma within ancient wayfinders.[7]
After developing an early interest in alien species, the Clone Commander designated CC-1004 chose to nickname himself Gree[1] upon completion of his advanced training on the planet Kamino. His hope was that he could identify others who shared his interests by provoking a reaction to his nickname,[5] as anyone who recognized the name of the obscure Gree species was likely interested in exobiology.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, Gree were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[8] The species originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in "The Gree Enclave," an article written by Timothy S. O'Brien with illustrations by Chris Gossett that was published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 8 in November 1995.[9]

This article treats the Gree system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Gree species.
