A Rodian Grand Protector
The Grand Protector, or Inta'si'rin'na in Rodese, was the leader of Rodia and the Rodian species.[1] The Grand Protector's power depended on his ability to keep power in his tribe.
The title originated from the Chief Protector of the Soammei clan, when it dominated all others of the planet. The name signified that he "protected" all Rodians from predators and enemies, but in reality he was an overlord. His rule was nominal, as real power was held by the Protectors under him.[1]
Usually Grand Protectors were self-serving dictators who looked after the interests of their own clan; others controlled one or two clans. A Chief Protector reigned under them. Most Grand Protectors did not live through their biological lifespan and they were violently deposed in conflict; in more peaceful times they handed the title to their Chief Protector, although this successor was seen as a weakling who didn't deserve the position.[1]
After Rodia was discovered by the Galactic Republic, the Grand Protector saw an opportunity to join it and expand their hunting culture to the the galaxy. In order to let his people leave the planet, and exclude his political adversaries from finding off-world allies, he instituted a series of contests and games to determine the best hunters; then he could send his allies to the best hunts, and his enemies to lethal targets. Eventually this was formalized into the Goa-Ato, the Hunters' Guild whose Master is the Grand Protector. In those early years it was the Republic ships on which hunters were leaving.[1]
Subsequent Grand Protectors had different emigration policies, but the general trend was to be loosened, especially after Rodian businesses had their own ships. Since the hyperdrive era, the Grand Protector was the negotiator with intergalactic entities, such as governments, corporations or criminal organizations.[1]
One Grand Protector ruled in a time when gladiatorial hunting matches were flourishing; he had the tactic of putting his rivals in gladiatorial games to keep them occupied and drive them against each other. After a bloody conflict, the Chattza clan accused their adverary for cheating. This started an interclan war that lasted for years, from which Chattza emerged dominant.[1]
One of the most notable Grand Protectors was Harido Kavila, who invented Rodian Theater and is credited with preventing the Rodians from wiping each other out. Another notable Protector was Navik, Protector during the Galactic Empire, who imposed strict rules on emigration and traffic to and from Rodia.[1]
