Scarecrow (talk - history - links - logs - delete - protect)
I believe this page should be deleted, because it is non-notable and doesn't even depict a scarecrow doing what a scarecrow does. The Hungry One 2 (talk) 03:40, April 22, 2018 (UTC)

- Your second point, The Hungry One 2, is a fixable problem and certainly not grounds for deletion of the page. But your first point is grounds enough—this is nothing more than a dictionary entry. (Also, your nomination of the page does not count as a vote; you still need to vote if you want to affect the outcome of the page.) Asithol (talk) 01:35, April 25, 2018 (UTC)
In the book, a scarecrow was not depicted scaring birds or rodents away from crops. It was merely a descriptive of a flight suit stuffed like a scarecrow. And the descriptive was just from Timothy Zahn for us. For all we know, in the Star Wars galaxy they have a droid or a drone to do that function. The Hungry One 2 (talk)1358 (Talk) 09:54, April 25, 2018 (UTC)Exiled Jedi (talk) 10:19, April 25, 2018 (UTC)

- After taking the time to look into this a little bit, I want to say first that I think this nomination has done a poor, if not outright misleading, job of representing this subject. Courtesy of Tommy, who took the time to collect this for us, I have provided the passage from Thrawn that mentions scrarecrow (see the excerpt in the Comments section below). Firstly, the passage perfectly describes a scarecrow's function in the GFFA, contrary to what the nominator's original comments claim above. Even if one were to dismiss that as non-notable on the grounds of the Dictionary policy, I would argue that the existence of the scarecrow in Star Wars nonetheless constitutes that policy's "unique incongruity," as demonstrated by Eli's comments that "some farmers still use scarecrows to keep birds out of their crops," which is to say their use has become outdated in a technologically-superior galaxy. This follows the precedent established in recent TC decisions on Toothbrush and Bed. Moreover, there is clearly some in-universe cultural notability surrounding a scarecrow's use, as demonstrated by Eli's comments that they're used in festivals and parades, as well as Parck's unfamiliarity and dismissal of such practices out of his "Core World prejudices." This is clearly more than a simple non-notable Dictionary case. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 17:31, April 25, 2018 (UTC)

Passage from Thrawn
| Eli had gone through nearly all of it when Barris and a black-uniformed, black-helmeted navy trooper returned carrying a V-wing pilot's flight suit. A flight suit stuffed with grass, leaves, and strange-smelling red berries. "What is this?" Parck demanded. "This is what we found near the crash site," Barris said grimly as they set the suit on the ground in front of the captain. "The body's gone. Nothing left but this-this-" He waved a hand. "Scarecrow," Eli murmured. Parck sent him a sharp look. "Is this something you people do out here?" "Some farmers still use scarecrows to keep birds out of their crops," Eli said, his face warming. You people. Parck was letting his Core World prejudices peek out. "They're also used in festivals and parades." |
