I am proposing an image change for the Map of the galaxy Interactive Map. CT is necessary here because this Interactive Map was previously voted to be placed on two articles and to be upload protected.
Currently, the Map of the galaxy Interactive Map uses a scan of the original version of the official galaxy map from the Star Wars Galaxy Map promotional poster as its background, but three other versions of that same map have been released in Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition, Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Visual Guide, and the brand new The Star Wars Galaxy page on starwars.com. As all of these versions feature or exclude different planets/points on the map, I have overlayed the three newer maps onto the original file and photoshopped them into a compilation featuring all of the planets/points from all of the versions, with the intention of using it to update the Interactive Map by making it more modern/relevant and more complete.
Here are both images for reference:
If you're more curious or have questions, the next two paragraphs contain more specific details:
While the new image is not the prettiest, it is absolutely accurate thanks to how easy it was to line up the grids on the different versions. Everything is in the correct positions, and points that are supposed to be connected to hyperspace routes are still properly connected. I've also beautified it a little by removing the overflowing images on the edges and replacing them with the grid from the newer versions. I know some of the areas are now very busy (like the Occlusion Zone area) and I understand if people dislike it based on that reason alone, but I did work to ensure the labels were all discernible and lined up with the points; they weren't just all thrown on there. The outer border of the Outer Rim Territories has also been adjusted to match the newest shape. The region labels on the original map no longer fit in the spots they were in before, so I have replaced them with the labels from the newest version.
Since the new image was overlayed onto the same base image currently used by the Interactive Map, none of the markers already on it will be messed up if the image is replaced (I have done a test edit to confirm this). The catch that comes with that is that none of the markers to the west of Csilla featured on the newest version of the map fit. The positions of the few planets that were changed (namely Nevarro) have been updated, and I will adjust the markers if this change passes. And if anyone doesn't know, compilation images are allowed for specific use cases.

Vote 1: Main proposal
Replace the background image for Map:Map of the galaxy with the new compilation image (File:SWGalaxyMapCompilation.png) and update corresponding {{MapBox}} templates to list all four sources used to create the new file (Star Wars Galaxy Map, Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition, Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Visual Guide, and The Star Wars Galaxy).
If this fails, the outcomes of the two subvotes below are moot.

- Feels.... inappropriate to use a fan-created compilation image. Cade

Vote 2: Subvote for Galaxy Map poster page
Here's the catch and the other reason this needs a CT: the aforementioned Interactive Map is currently on the Star Wars Galaxy Map page, which covers the original promotional poster. As the new compilation will no longer only depict the original poster, I am putting up a subvote for whether or not the Interactive Map should remain on the poster's page if the main proposal passes and the background image is replaced.
Keep
- I expect people to disagree with me on this one, but ultimately the base image of the poster and basically all of its elements are still present, and the MapBox caption will label that multiple sources have been added to it. Panther436

- I think it's pretty misleading to have a photoshopped image used to represent (even if in a Map) a specific map product. Imperators II(Talk) 19:56, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- The article is for that specific Star Wars: Timelines promotional map and not for future iteration of the map. Bonzane10

Vote 3: Subvote for The Star Wars Galaxy page
I am also offering up the chance for the Map of the galaxy Interactive Map to be added to the The Star Wars Galaxy page, which covers the Starwars.com webpage. The webpage itself and Jason Fry both claim that it and the poster are intended to be the same map, which would make this appropriate. However, the base of the compilation is still based on the original poster and several points from the new version are missing (everything west of Csilla), so it is obviously not exactly the same thing. Support will add the Interactive Map to our The Star Wars Galaxy page.

- I wouldn't mind this, hence why I'm offering it up, but ultimately I think since the base image is different and that western UR region section is missing, not all the parts of it are there, so it's not totally applicable. Panther436

Discuss
- Just so we're clear here, I will note that the compilations and collages bit of the policy was definitely written with collages in mind, i.e. otherwise-unmodified images stacked next to each other, not overlaid images. Imperators II(Talk) 19:56, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- I personally don't think this is against that if that's what you're implying (compilations and collages come in many forms) but the potential for different interpretations of that was another reason why I wanted to put this up to a CT to be approved cause I wasn't sure everyone would be onboard. It's okay if you're against it, but in my view this is just a compilation of what is intended to be different versions of the same image, and is being utilized here simply for technical illustration purposes in a very specific use case, which is what I think that rule is intended for. - Is the proposed implication here that we update this map every time the now-online map is updated? Imperators II(Talk) 19:56, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- We absolutely don't have to, and I'm not trying to reserve the right to do so or anything. This is just intended to be the map for now. Maybe in a few years we can update it, but with no reference books and hardly any projects on the horizon, I doubt we'll get such an all-at-once severe and necessary update in the vein of the ones posed by the reference books listed above for a while now.
