Following this discussion about either we should allow user-made outlines on top of official images or not, I think there is enough ground for me to propose a new subsection/rule to the Images policy, section Edited images, to strictly frame this kind of modification within our policy, as follow: 

===Outlines of routes===
1. An image of a map can be modified to include an user-made outline to highlight routes, tracks, paths, etc. as long as no official illustration already serves the exact same purpose. The modified image needs to be identified as such through the use of the "description" and "filespecs" parameters within the {{Information}} template on their File page, as well as linking to an unmodified version of the original image, using the "other versions" parameter on the same template.

In addition to the initial proposal, a second vote should determine the context in which modified images are allowed, with the addition of this sentence: 

2. Use of such a modified image must be limited to the "Behind the scenes" section of an article, with the image caption reflecting its modified state.

  • I like the proposed sections, and those Racer images do look useful to the reader, but on the downside, I believe this could pave the way for use of redundant and/or poorly modified images. Perhaps allowing their use on a case-by-case basis, similar to how we handle GIFs, might be a better approach. TanDivoInsignia-SenateMurders Anıl Şerifoğlu (talk) 21:10, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
    • As noted in the SH, the policy already allows for image editing, per "However, a small amount of editing is permissible in order to enhance an image's usefulness or illustrative capability. Excessively edited images may be deleted at the discretion of the administration." My intent is to better frame this kind of modification, not to add what I think would be an unnecessary bureaucratic step in this case. It works with gifs, because their use could be easily abused, but in this case, there's little ground to expect heavy abuse, and the policy allow the administration to react whenever.
