The result of the debate was support talk page changes, no consensus for including link fixing clause. OOM 224 (he/him) 14:28, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Per the discussion on Forum:SH:Enough talk (page policy), I propose to revise the Talk page policy: proposed revision (diff). A huge thank you to everyone who have helped with the proposal! Many items have been added, removed, or rewritten for clarity.

Main points:

  • General restructuring and clean-up.
  • Added mention of {{Unsigned}}
  • Added leeway for editing messages, e.g. typos and formatting.
  • Added a clause on link fixes, based on community debate.
  • Added mentions of the various user conduct policies (WP:NPA, WP:CIVIL, WP:DISCRIMINATION etc.) and clarified RevisionDelete usage.
  • Removed mention of "potentially defamatory comments" as a condition for redaction.
  • Specified redirect usage/deletion conditions, per WP:USER and WP:DELETE.

Secondary vote

I have included a secondary vote that specifies whether to keep or remove the proposed link fixing clause, given that the issue of link fixing has attracted more debate. The proposed link fixing clause does not address redirects or redlinks leading to the main namespace because they're a bit more complex. To repeat, the current proposal is:

  • "For maintenance purposes, redlinks may be removed if they lead to non-existent pages outside the main article namespace. The original content must not be altered, so the wikicode link formatting should be neutralized using <nowiki> and </nowiki> tags (e.g. {{Example1}} and [[Category:Example2]])."

Whichever way we vote here, we're gonna have a separate discussion on the topic of link fixing. Plus, if there is another clause that you object to, we could add a separate voting section addressing it.

Keep link fixing clause

  6. Given this is specifically for non-mainspace seems decent enough. Personally, nowiki-ing rather than other options preserves the intent of a message in its purest form.—spookywillowwtalk 18:49, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Remove link fixing clause

  1. We're still discussing what to do with TC'd pages and their links. If we decide to redirect them to the TC page, these links should remain. As such, I don't think we should be changing policy to remove them until the wider discussion finishes. NBDani TeamFireballLogo-Collider(they/them)Yeager's Repairs 14:14, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
    • To add on, there is an idea floating around about specific guidelines on what to do with different types of redlinks. That's the kind of policy I want for redlinks. NBDani TeamFireballLogo-Collider(they/them)Yeager's Repairs 14:17, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
    • I want to further clarify my stance because OOM has removed the talk page reference and I realize my vote only mentioned it, I'm still holding an oppose because I think how we handle all redlinks, be it on pages, talk pages, forums, anywhere basically, should be consistent with each other. As such, I don't want to vote in a policy that has vague instructions on how to handle a choice few, when I believe there is a solution in the works to fully encompass all redlinks in a precise manner. 2. Per Dani, redirecting TC'd pages seems like it might be the most reasonable potential solution to come out of that discussion, in which case going around nowiki-ing links to them wouldn't make as much sense anymore. Imperators II(Talk) 14:22, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

  • Did not realise the redirect talk in the TC links discussion. I've now removed the "either a page that was deleted via a Trash compactor vote or " part from the clause. OOM 224 (he/him) 14:49, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
