Hi there. Right now, our Deletion policy allows for unconditional speedy-deleting of old file revisions ("Files that violate the Files policy as well as old revisions of files may be speedy deleted"). I think this practice is strange at best, given that old file revisions play a similar role with respect to Wookieepedia's files as edit history does to its pages. On Wookieepedia's Discord server we also just witnessed an illustrative example of how the deletion of old file revisions nearly led to irreversible loss of information.

Now, we have to keep in mind that there are certain types of images that have no business being uploaded on Wookieepedia to begin with, prominently unofficially upscaled images, which which would present problems if allowed to remain accessible in old file revision form.

With both of the concerns in mind, I propose we change the wording of the Deletion policy to (emphasis shows newly added wording):

Files or old revisions of files that violate the Files policy may be speedy deleted.

  • From the standpoint of maintaining a historical record: do we no longer mark JPG images as CSD that have been replaced by PNG versions of higher quality, or with transparent background and instead link to the original JPG upload in the replacement file page? - JMAS Jolly Trooper Hey, it's me! 03:56, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
