This vote is a proposal for a change to the timeline of A New Hope (hereinafter referred to as ANH) in the current canon. It is a continuation of the Forum:SH:A New Hope Timeline. This does not apply to Star Wars Legends.
Currently, Wookieepedia dates the Battle of Yavin and all events preceding it in ANH to 0 BBY per the 2016 Star Wars: Galactic Atlas in the current canon articles. However, in Star Wars: Galactic Atlas: Updated Edition, released November 2025, the events prior to the Battle of Yavin, including the destruction of Alderaan, are dated to 1 BBY. The Battle of Yavin is also dated to "0" and the Medal Ceremony is dated to 0 ABY. I think we should adopt this system and expand the range from 1 BBY to just before the Battle of Yavin and abolishing 0 BBY. We can simply cite Galactic Atlas: Updated Edition. For clarity, I'll split the vote into two sections.
The first vote is to eliminate the notation "0 BBY." Both Star Wars: Timelines and Galactic Atlas: Updated Edition have moved away from this notation 0 BBY, and Pablo Hidalgo's reply on Bluesky also indicates that it no longer exists.
The second vote is to date all events prior to the Battle of Yavin in ANH to 1 BBY. Timelines dates the entire ANH event to "0," which conflicts with the Galactic Atlas: Updated Edition dating system, but I support Galactic Atlas one. Since the 'ABY-BBY' dating system is based on the Battle of Yavin, only the Battle of Yavin should be dated to "0."
If the first vote passes, how it's implemented will depend on the outcome of the second vote. If both votes pass, since 0 is a period that only refers to the Battle of Yavin, we won't need to include 0 in the article's prose or infobox. Eventually, 0 BBY will also eventually redirect to the 'ABY-BBY' dating system, but only after updating the most of the nearly 1,700 pages currently linking to 0 BBY. If the first vote passes and the second vote fails, we'll move the 0 BBY page to "0," but in this case we will need to discuss how to refer to the year in the article at a later time.
Vote 1: Abolish 0 BBY
In the current canon, abolish 0 BBY and replace "0."
