Flying attack droids were a type of floating, spherical droid that the merchant Tuut Orial sold from a stall on the asteroid Port Borgo around 9 ABY. During a demonstration of the droids, one poked an Aqualish observer in the eye and another chased the child KB. The droid SM-33 later punched a flying attack droid out of the air while defending KB and her friends.

Flying attack droids were a type of small,[2] floating, spherical droid with two limbs, one ending in a circular saw and the other in a trio of blades. The limbs were attached to a metallic gray band that ran around the circumference of the droids' white bodies, and several red sensors were also located on the band.[1]

Around 9 ABY,[3] the merchant Tuut Orial sold flying attack droids from a cart full of them on the pirate-infested asteroid Port Borgo, demonstrating the droids' abilities to those that passed by. The merchant called the droids a bargain and advertised them as lethal assassins with fascinating weaponry and novel toxins. During one demonstration, Orial threw a piece of fruit up into the air for a droid to slice in half.[1]

An Aqualish observer then poked one of the demonstration droids, which responded by poking the Aqualish in the eye. One of the droids then began pursuing the watching child KB, who backed away from it into[1] her[2] friend Fern, after which the droid stopped following her. When a group of pirates later surrounded KB, Fern, and their friends Wim and Neel with the intent to rob them, the droid SM-33 came to their defense. SM-33 punched the pirate Vane into a stand by Orial's attack droid stall, attracting the attention of a trio of the flying attack droids, one of whom flew at SM-33 with its saw active. SM-33 then punched the attack droid[1] out of the air.[2]

Behind the scenes

Flying attack droids first appeared in "Way, Way Out Past the Barrier,"[1] the second episode of the live-action Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which aired on December 2, 2024.[4] Their name was not spoken in the episode[1] but was given in the audio description.[2]

  3. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition, SWInsider "A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well. StarWars.com SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
