"Who authorized you to launch an attack on Vallt?"
―Vice Chancellor Mas Amedda questions Lieutenant Commander Orson Krennic, who was given authorization by the admiral — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

An individual served as an admiral within the naval branch of the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The admiral held authority over naval operations that occurred within the Juris sector of the Outer Rim Territories, an area of space that included the planet Vallt. In 21 BBY, the admiral approved an attack on Vallt—which had fallen to a Separatist-backed coup—that was proposed to them by Lieutenant Commander Orson Callan Krennic. The operation proved to be a success, returning Vallt to the Republic and allowing it to become a staging ground for future operations.

Biography

"You said you didn't want to know any details. Have you changed your mind?"
"I don't want to know. And yet intelligence reaches me and I'm obliged to become involved. Who?"
"The admiral in command of that sector. The attack was part of the deal we made with Zerpen, and also a means of safeguarding anything Galen Erso may have revealed to Vallt's Separatist regime regarding the disposition of Republic warships in that sector."
"Erso wasn't in possession of any intelligence to that effect."
"Just to be sure, then."

An individual who lived during the Clone Wars, a galaxy-wide conflict between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic, became an admiral in the naval branch of the latter faction, eventually being given authority over naval operations in[1] the Juris sector[2] of the Outer Rim Territories.[1] In 21 BBY,[3] Lieutenant Commander Orson Callan Krennic, circumventing the chain of command, came to the admiral for permission to launch an attack on the planet Vallt,[1] a Juris sector[2] world which had fallen to a Separatist-backed coup several months prior. In truth, Krennic was interested in Vallt because he sought to rescue his old friend Galen Walton Erso—a scientist whom he hoped to manipulate into a top-secret battle station program—and his family.[1]

Although Galen knew nothing about the affairs of the Republic Military, the admiral—concerned the scientist had revealed details about naval efforts within Vallt's sector to the Separatist government—approved Krennic's mission. Additionally, the assault was designed to give the world's pro-Republic legions a chance to regain control, while Erso's former employer, Zerpen Industries, also approved the attack to reclaim its fusion facility on Vallt. During the mission, Krennic lied to the Ersos by claiming that the mission had been approved by the highest levels of the Republic. The operation proved to be a success and opened up the chance for Vallt to become a Republic staging ground. Afterward, despite having previously requested to not know any details of the plan, Republic Vice Chancellor Mas Amedda angrily demanded to know who had approved the attack. After trying to vaguely answer that it was a decision made by the Republic Military, Krennic explained the admiral's agreement.[1]

Behind the scenes

The admiral was mentioned in James Luceno's 2016 novel, Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel. In the novel, the sector that the admiral oversees is not specified, with the novel only confirming it contained Vallt.[1] The identity of the sector would later be confirmed through the StarWars.com appendix "Star Systems of the Galaxy,"[2] which was edited by Jason Fry and first posted on June 24, 2025,[4] through that article's placement of the Vallt system in the Juris sector.[2]

As Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of Rogue One to 1 BBY, the rescue of the Erso family, and therefore the admiral's approval of the mission, must take place in 21 BBY.
