The Knell of Muspilli was a death cult that dwelt among the moon-trees of the Gunninga Gap within the Unknown Regions. The Knell claimed to possess the ability to summon apocalyptic deities from the realm beyond shadows. In time, the philosophy of the Knell of Muspilli and other groups from the Unknown Regions became part of the ideological foundation of the later organization known as the Sorcerers of Rhand.

History

At the dawn of history, a death cult known as the Knell of Muspilli dwelt amid the drifting moon-trees,[2] which blossomed in the interstellar space of the Gunninga Gap deep within the Unknown Regions.[3] The cult’s followers claimed to have possessed the power to summon apocalyptic deities from the realm beyond shadows. To perform such a ritual, they transcribed the Taurannik Codex in the hope of opening the Gap’s spatial fissure.[1]

Mother Talzin doubted the true capabilities of the cult, as she had found no evidence to support their claims

At some point after 200,000 BBY, the Knell of Muspilli engaged in a terrible naval battle against a sisterhood offshoot of the Warriors of the Shadow above an unnamed moon in the Unknown Regions. Centuries later, during the tense period of the Cold War, the ancient battlefield was discovered, where derelict starships still remained.[4]

Many millennia later, mention of the Knell of Muspilli appeared in the Book of Sith, within the section «Wild Power», authored by the Dathomirian witch Talzin, who regarded the true capabilities of the organization with skepticism.[2]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the dark side adept Cronal visited the Gunninga Gap and searched among the drifting moon-trees, where he found scraps of the Taurannik Codex, which had been destroyed in the ancient cataclysm. The cultists who had once inhabited the site did not oppose Cronal, although it was likely that, by that time, their society had already vanished.[3] However, the sect’s existence had not passed without trace, for over many generations their philosophical schools – together with the fanatical flock of the Kanzer Exiles and the Taung priestly community – gave rise to the religious movement known as the Sorcerers of Rhand beneath the shroud of the Perann Nebula within the same Unknown Regions.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Knell of Muspilli was first mentioned in the 2010 reference guide The Unknown Regions. It seemed that the name of the sect had originated from Muspell, the name of a mythological being from Norse mythology.
