The Perann Nebula was a nebula located deep within the Unknown Regions.[3] It was a vast cloud of dust, rock, and interstellar gas that pulsed with a bloody and forbidding scarlet glow as it radiated the energy of twelve stellar clusters within. The twelve clusters that it surrounded were known collectively as the Nihil Retreat. The absolute rulers of the Nihil Retreat, dreaded masters of dark magicks, were the Sorcerers of Rhand.[1] The nebula contained the planet Rhand, which served as a sanctuary for the Sorcerers, since reaching the planet had been impossible without specific coordinates obtained at the Retreat or the guidance of a Force-user.[3]

Behind the scenes

The novel Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor first established the Nihil Retreat as "twelve stellar clusters within" the Perann Nebula,[1] however, The Unknown Regions establishes the Nihil Retreat as forming "a protective bulwark around the Perann Nebula."[3] The 2015 update to the Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion simply stated the Perann Nebula to be located within the Unknown Regions. Lucasfilm has yet to provide clarification for this discrepancy.
