Inside view

The Troop Transport Tank,[1] also known as the Kago Cargo,[4] was a thick and armored repulsorcraft fortress built for war[5] that could carry an army of troopers as well as multiple cannons and an array of weapons.[1] It featured a top longitudinal beam with turret guns on either side and a main hull taken and modified from an All Terrain Armored Transport. Two individuals could pilot the tank.[2]

Made of metal,[5] the Kago Cargo was equipped with several hatches capable of opening outward, three of them also functioning as ramps for boarding and deboarding. It possessed two cargo hold areas, one meant for bandit leader Kouru, and another for the rest of the Bandit Troopers she led, the latter of which doubled as storage space for spoils of war.[2] It also had rope moorings, and a platform on lift that led to an upper hatch.[1] Red-colored lights shone from diverse parts of both the vessel's exterior and interior.[3]

History

Two decades after the Sith rebellion, self-styled Dark Lord of the Sith Kouru led Bandit Troopers on the planet Genbara from a deserted village in the mountains to another nearby settlement using the Troop Transport Tank, not for the first time.[5] Two troopers piloted the ship,[3] while the rest played dice[6] while the vessel rumbled through the village.[5]

Stopping at the main square beside the storehouse Mamura's and opposite the establishment Joganman, the bandits demanded goods from the villagers as a form of tax,[5] ordering them to open up the storehouse.[7] The village chief refused to comply, insisting that the bandits had already taken enough. Moments later, bounty hunter guards began an assault on the invaders, and a firefight ensued in front of the Kago Cargo.[5] A trooper manning one of the turrets fired at the watchtower, shooting off a Tusken Raider sniper who was perched in it, being later slain by other troopers on the ground. With the help of former the Sith known as the Ronin and his astromech droid companion R5-D56, both of whom happened to be in the area, the bandits were eventually subdued in front of the vessel.[3]

Behind the scenes

"Everything was repurposed. [...] The Kago Cargo was born from a conversation with creative producer Mizusaki. Its body is from a detail of a 1989 MPC version of the AT-AT."

The Troop Transport Tank first appeared in "The Duel," a non-canon short film released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series, produced by Kamikaze Douga, and released on Disney+[3] on September 22, 2021.[8] Before the short's release, it was first pictured in the original[9] and English dub trailers for the series uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of the same year.[10]

Born from a conversation between character designer Takashi Okazaki and creative producer Jumpei Mizusaki,[4] the design of the Troop Transport Tank featured in "The Duel" took inspiration from both samurai and space opera film genres.[1] Its look was based on historical Japanese palanquins known as kago, in which the poles were shouldered by several people. It main body was taken from the middle section of a 1989 Model Products Corporation AT-AT toy.[4] A production sketch suggests Kouru's room in the vessel was a Japanese-style room.[2] Concept art for the vessel was also included in Zack Davisson's 2022 reference book The Art of Star Wars: Visions.[4]
