"The lacquered, black cane was fashioned from greel ebonwood. It was finished with metallic caps on either end, cast from ore mined in Velser's Ring, an asteroid field in the Bespin system."
―A book's description of Lando Calrissian's cane[2]

Ebonwood was a type of black wood with a variant known as greel ebonwood. During the First Order-Resistance War, First Order Allegiant General Enric Pryde carried a swaggerstick made from lacquered ebonwood, the design being from military riding traditions on Pryde's homeworld of Alsakan. In addition, the Rebel Alliance veteran Lando Calrissian owned a lacquered greel ebonwood cane during that time.[1] A book describing objects relating to galactic history included an entry on the cane, elaborating on the materials it was crafted from, including greel ebonwood.[2]

The Galaxy Needs You contained ebonwood's debut.

Ebonwood first appeared in the form of Lando Calrissian's greel ebonwood cane in the picture book The Galaxy Needs You, which was written by Caitlin Kennedy, illustrated by Eda Kaban,[3] and released on December 17, 2019.[4] The depiction of the cane drew from Calrissian's look in[5] the final sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, which debuted on December 20 of that year.[6]

Lando Calrissian's greel ebonwood cane was depicted earlier on in several concept art drawings by chief costume concept artist Glyn Dillon and prop concept designer Matthew Savage.[7] The cane was first pictured prior to its in-universe debut in a StarWars.com article released on September 26, 2019 that previewed then-upcoming Star Wars merchandise, some relating to The Rise of Skywalker.[8] Ebonwood, and greel ebonwood, were first identified by name in the film's accompanying reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo.[1]
