"The lacquered, black cane was fashioned from greel ebonwood. It was finished with metallic caps on either end, cast from ore mined in Velser's Ring, an asteroid field in the Bespin system."
―A book's description of Lando Calrissian's cane[2]

Greel ebonwood was a type of ebonwood[1] that shared its name with greel-wood.[3] By 35 ABY,[4] Lando Calrissian—a Resistance member[1] and former gambler,[2] smuggler,[1] Baron Administrator of the Cloud City settlement,[2] and Rebel Alliance officer—possessed a black cane fashioned from greel ebonwood that had a lacquered finish.[1] A book describing objects relating to galactic history included an entry on the cane, elaborating on the materials it was crafted from, including greel ebonwood.[2]

Behind the scenes

Greel ebonwood first appeared in the form of Lando Calrissian's cane in The Galaxy Needs You, a picture book written by Caitlin Kennedy, illustrated by Eda Kaban,[5] and published on December 17, 2019.[6] The illustration was based on Calrissian's look in[7] the December 20, 2019 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.[8]

Chief costume concept artist Glyn Dillon and prop concept designer Matthew Savage created several concept art drawings featuring Lando Calrissian's greel ebonwood cane.[9] Prior to the cane's debut in in-universe stories, it was first pictured on September 26, 2019 in a StarWars.com article previewing then-upcoming Star Wars merchandise, including that related to the film.[10] The wood was identified by name in the film's accompanying reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo.[1] Calrissian's cane, and therefore greel ebonwood, was featured on the solicitation cover of Titan Magazines' May 4, 2021 book Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – The Official Collector's Edition, but the cane was not depicted on the book's final cover.[11]
