"Is everyone on this planet homicidal?"
―Lando Calrissian[3]

Drogheda was a planet in the Mid Rim Teraab sector that was rich in ore and had a strong mining industry as of the Galactic Civil War. Drogheda was ruled by a monarchy until 4 ABY, when a popular revolutionary front overthrew the reigning Queen Sarna with the intention of installing a democratic government. Sarna was transported into exile by Rebel Alliance hero Lando Calrissian, who played a role in the revolution.

Description

A planet located in the Mid Rim's Teraab sector,[1] Drogheda was a world of mountains and dramatic cliffs, a rugged landscape that ensured that many of its inhabited areas could not be reached over land. The planet was rich in natural resources, and the planet's ore fueled a profitable mining sector on Drogheda.[3] During the era of the Galactic Civil War, Drogheda received tibanna shipments from Bespin.[5]

History

"When your sister said that she had a job for me, Danu, I didn't realize it was target practice—or is this what passes for the welcome wagon on Drogheda?"
―Lando Calrissian[3]

During the Kymoodon Era, Drogheda was one of several worlds assaulted by Hutt-backed forces in areas that were then beyond the Republic's frontier—fragmentary information on the battle was later uncovered in a Kymoodon-era government archive on Belasco in 5 ABY.[6] Drogheda was governed by a traditional monarchy until 4 ABY, when a popular revolutionary movement arose during the unrest following the Battle of Endor, aiming to overthrow Queen Sarna and install a democratic government. Although much of the rebellion was massacred by regime forces at Mount Meru Mine, the revolutionaries ultimately stormed the Drogheda Citadel through the planning of Sarna's sister Danu and a timely distraction from Rebel Alliance hero Lando Calrissian. Sarna was deposed and sent into exile, and Calrissian was also forced to leave despite his part in aiding the revolution.[3]

Inhabitants

"Since my father's death I've ruled Drogheda the best I can. I've always put the welfare of my people above everything else."
―Queen Sarna[3]

Although governed by an aristocratic, traditional monarchy, mining was the most important sector of the Droghedan economy, and rebellion against the upper class fomented within the blue-collar miners. The miners repurposed the shafts and tunnels in which they worked to serve as staging grounds for their revolution.[3]

Locations

Drogheda's political center was the massive Drogheda Citadel, a virtually impregnable fortress located at the top of a soaring peak, which was only accessible via sky-sled. The building's gleaming interior was richly appointed, and until 4 ABY the planet's monarch governed from a circular throne room in the citadel's heart. By contrast, much of the blue-collar miners who formed the revolution in 4 ABY inhabited the planet's mines, which served as shelters deep within the mountains.[3]

Behind the scenes

Drogheda appeared as the setting of Star Wars (1977) 83, written by Linda Grant, illustrated by Bob McLeod and released in 1984.[3]
