- "And Masters Devo and Shonnatrucks are greeting some of the new security forces the Republic has sent for the fair before they head over for the ceremony, which is imminent."
- ―V-18, to Ram Jomaram
Devo was a Valon Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order in the Outer Rim planet Valo's Jedi temple. In 231 BBY, they and other Jedi welcomed security forces sent by the Galactic Republic arriving for the world's Republic Fair. The following year, Devo was killed by Nihil marauders during an attack on Valo while trying to flee into the planet's mountains with the temple's younglings. In 229 BBY, the Jedi younglings Gavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep—who had survived the attack—returned to Lonisa City and informed Padawan Ram Jomaram of Devo and the other Masters' fates.
Biography
- "Go back, stay with the adults, and they'll be able to protect you from the Nihil."
"They won't. They can't. We don't have anyone to return to." - ―Ram Jomaram and Gavi, about Devo and Valo's other Jedi Masters
Devo was a Valon Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order at the Valo Temple on[2] the Outer Rim[3] planet Valo during the High Republic Era.[2] In 231 BBY,[4] they and Master Shonnatrucks helped receive security forces sent by the Galactic Republic for Valo's upcoming Republic Fair scheduled to be hosted in the world's[2] capital,[3] Lonisa City. While there, the two Masters were accompanied by Padawans from the temple. Not long after, the droid V-18 learned of a perimeter security breach of Valo's Crashpoint Tower communications tower, followed by the planet's comms becoming faulty. After failing to locate Devo and the Valo Temple's other Jedi Masters or raise them on comm, the droid informed Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram of the issues and also recounted the locations of the rest of the Valon Jedi. Ultimately, the tower's functionality was restored by Jomaram, allowing the Jedi to work with the Republic to repel a strike on the Republic Fair by Nihil marauders.[2]
Three younglings informed Ram Jomaram (center left) of Devo's death to the Nihil.
Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station[3] in 230 BBY,[5] Valo's Jedi Masters prepared to flee to the Jedi Temple on[3] the Core Worlds planet[5] Coruscant. However, their efforts were stalled when Valo was attacked by the Nihil not long after[3] in the same year.[1] All of the Valo Temple's Masters[3]—including Devo[6]—hurriedly attempted to flee into the world's mountains to escape Lonisa City. However, the Nihil caught the Jedi and killed all of them despite their attempts to fight back, with several being fed to a Force-eating Nameless creature—resulting in only the younglings Gavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep surviving. After living in Valo's mountains alone for a year, the three younglings returned to the city and introduced themselves to Jomaram—who had been acting as an anti-Nihil saboteur nicknamed the "Scarlet Skull"—telling him of the deaths of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters. The Padawan—who had hoped Devo and the others were gathering strength for a strike against the Nihil—grieved their passing.[3]
Powers and abilities
As a member of the Jedi Order, Devo was a Force-sensitive individual trained to wield the Force.[3]
Behind the scenes
Devo was first mentioned in Race to Crashpoint Tower, a junior novel written by Daniel José Older as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase I that was published on June 29, 2021.[7] Prior to its release, the Jedi's mention was included in a preview for the work printed in the junior novel A Test of Courage,[8] published on January 5 of the same year.[7] On Twitter, Older confirmed that all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters—including Devo—perished in the Nihil attack mentioned in The High Republic: Escape from Valo,[6] a 2024 junior novel written by himself and Alyssa Wong as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic's[3] Phase III.[7]

Notes and references
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 The events of The High Republic: Escape from Valo take place one year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which equates to 229 BBY per Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. The novel establishes that the attack on Valo—in which all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters, save for Kunpar Vasivola, died on Valo—took place one year before, meaning Devo must have passed away in 230 BBY.

Daniel José Older (@djolder) on Twitter (post on January 31, 2024): "yes all dead" (screenshot) (In response to: "There's some Valo Jedi Masters from Race to Crashpoint Tower (Lege, Shonnatrucks, Devo) then also a smattering of Valo Jedi Masters mentioned throughout Escape from Valo. The younglings in the novel and Driggit see many of them perish in the attack on Valo — is it safe to say all of them passed away save for Kunpar, or were there ones that survived and the younglings only assumed they all got dusted?")
