- "He's upset because the alarm called him away from a fresh denta bean bun."
- ―Mariek Panaka, referring to Quarsh Panaka
Denta bean buns were a bread dessert found on the planet Naboo. The dessert was edible by humans and featured denta beans as a primary ingredient.[1]
In 32 BBY,[2] the kitchen staff of the Theed Royal Palace of Naboo baked a batch of denta bean buns for a summit hosted by Queen Padmé Amidala. Royal Naboo Security Forces officers Quarsh and Mariek Panaka were about to eat some of the buns when a blood-sensitive sensor triggered an alarm in Amidala's private quarters. After the two discovered that the Queen and most of her handmaidens had secretly gone out, Quarsh expressed frustration. Mariek told the remaining handmaiden present, Saché, that Quarsh was merely upset at being called away from eating a fresh denta bean bun. Saché laughed at the idea that the officer would choose dessert over duty.[1]
Behind the scenes
- "I had Panaka eating red bean buns in the first draft, and Story Group was all 'can you make it more Star Wars–y?' and so I looked up a bunch of beans on the Wook, and the FIRST bean I found was a PERSON and the second bean was the dentabean, [sic] which I used… but only after reading the article like 14 times to make sure it wasn't related to toothbrushing."
- ―E. K. Johnston
Denta bean buns first appeared in Queen's Peril, a 2020 young-adult novel by E. K. Johnston as the second installment of Star Wars: Queen's Series.[1] Johnston noted that in the the first draft of Queen's Peril, Quarsh Panaka ate red bean buns. The Lucasfilm Story Group asked if Johnston could make the meal "more Star Wars-y," leading her to use the free-to-edit, unofficial online Star Wars encyclopedia known as Wookieepedia to search for beans unique to Star Wars, eventually finding denta beans.[3]
