- "They're making unstoppable B2s here."
- ―Anakin Skywalker to LebJau
The C-B3 cortosis battle droid,[2] or C-B3 for short,[6] was a cortosis-armored model variation of the B2-series super battle droids which were produced in secret by the Confederacy of Independent Systems on the planet Mokivj near the end of the Clone Wars, in 19 BBY. They were manufactured in the Mokivj droid factory by Duke Solha, his brother and his sister.[1]
When Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker discovered the cortosis super battle droids and the factory that produced them, he considered them "unstoppable" and a big threat to the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic. He therefore decided that he should destroy the factory that produced them along with all the already manufactured ones and the mine where the cortosis was being extracted. So that the Separatists couldn't manufacture any more droids on Mokivj. Skywalker set the mine to explode, despite the objections of Senator Padmé Amidala, Thrawn, and LebJau. The explosion was expanded by the cortosis which activated volcanic activity on the planet and caused a catastrophe. The schematics were also reprogrammed so that any future cortosis battle droids would end up destroying themselves.[1] While some C-B3s were later produced elsewhere, such as ones deployed to the planet Wrea, they used the sabotaged designs making them ineffective.[2]
The cortosis B2 super battle droid had the exact same weaponry as the standard model and the same height. However, the cortosis in their armor made them much heavier and also made them invulnerable to lightsabers and blaster bolts in their whole body but their optical sensors; as they weren't covered by cortosis. They were equipped with a dual wrist blaster, like the B2-series battle droid did.[1]
Description
The C-B3 cortosis battle droid[2] was a variation of the B2-series super battle droid, the cortosis variation had the same firepower, height, color and sensors as the base model. They were created by Duke Solha on the planet Mokivj.[1]
History
Production
In 19 BBY[7], Count of Serenno Dooku dispatched Duke Solha, his brother and his sister to oversee mining operations, processing of cortosis, and manufacturing of the cortosis variant of the B2 and cortosis clone trooper armor on Mokivj. Solha and his siblings used a fortress built prior to the Clone Wars to manufacture cortosis clone trooper armor and the cortosis battle droids.[1]
Defending the Mokivj droid factory
Cortosis B2 super battle droids participated in the raid on Solha's factory, defending the factory from the Jedi and Chiss Ascendancy attackers, cortosis super battle droids escorted Solha through the factory, protecting him from one of the attackers, Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. After Skywalker tried to confuse Solha's super battle droid escort, the battle droids sieged the raiders in another section of the factory.[1]
During the infiltration, Skywalker's droid R2-D2 gained access to the assembly's control system, and reprogrammed it so the cortosis would also cover the discharge capacitor, meaning every time it fired it would slowly damage its own system and its brain until it gets completely fried, meaning it would only last five minutes in active combat.[1] Some of these defective C-B3s would see production, and indeed were inefficient in battle. Clone Intelligence spotted some during a siege on Wrea. Later, the C-B3 was mentioned in an intelligence report, which was included in the survival compendium "Neyo's Almanac of Clankers."[2]
Imperial Era
In the time of the Galactic Empire, Saw Gerrera set up a base on Wrea and would use some of the droid bodies there for training. While staying with Gerrera, the young Jyn Erso encountered a shiny C-B3 droid that had been modified hastily. Erso considered the C-B3 to be a new model, believing it had only started to see manufacture following the Clone Wars, unaware[6] that C-B3s were used during the conflict and even the siege on Wrea.[2]
