Beryllium was a type of valuable ore, substantial deposits of which could be found on the planet Illarreen of[1] the Outer Rim Territories' Herios sector.[2] After the establishment of the Galactic Empire[1] in 19 BBY[3] led to the stagnation of the economy of Illarreen's native Poss'Nomin species, the planetary Poss'Nomin government auctioned off significant expanses of publicly owned land. Those territories were then predominantly purchased by influential offworld mining enterprises, which were interested in Illarreen's beryllium reserves but not in the plight of the Poss'Nomin.[1]
Behind the scenes
Beryllium was introduced in the Star Wars franchise via "Alien Encounters," a feature written by Trevor J. Wilson and Craig Robert Carey and published in the August 1997 fourteenth issue of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine.[1] In the real world, beryllium is a chemical element and metal. It does not occur in free form in nature and is instead extracted from ores such as beryl and bertrandite. Beryllium has a wide range of industrial applications.[4]
