Illarreen was an Outer Rim Territories planet located in the Herios sector. It was the homeworld of the sentient Poss'Nomin species, who originally evolved on the planet's island continent Vhin. After climate change transformed their habitat into a wasteland, the Poss'Nomin expanded across their homeworld's surface, over time forming powerful nations that ultimately fought a global war.

At that time, approximately a century before the Galactic Civil War, a group of offworld traders made first contact with the species. As a result, the Poss'Nomin ceased fighting and, within the span of a decade, formed a united planetary government. Over the following century, one-third of Illarreen's population adopted galactic standard technology, a change that transformed the Poss'Nomin society but also indirectly led to a depressed planetary economy that many members of the species left behind by traveling offworld.

Description

Illarreen was a temperate[4] terrestrial planet[3] located in the Illarreen system, a part of the Herios sector[1] in the Slice portion of[2] the Outer Rim Territories.[1] It possessed abundant reserves of beryllium ore.[3]

History

The sentient Poss'Nomin species evolved along the eastern shores of Illarreen's island continent Vhin. Due to sudden, intense climatic changes that were possibly caused by a solar flare, however, that region turned into an uninhabitable wasteland within the span of a few centuries. In response, the Poss'Nomin rapidly spread inland, eventually also crafting boats in order to reach other regions on Illarreen. Over time, prosperous local civilizations developed across the planet.[3]

A few thousand years later, a number of powerful Poss'Nomin nations had emerged. Eventually, conflicts between them led to the species' first global war. During that time, barely[3] a century before the Galactic Civil War,[4] a group of spice traders chanced upon the previously unexplored Illarreen. Deciding to investigate the planet, the traders encountered the Poss'Nomin, who were engaged in massive global warfare. In order to comprehend the nature of the visitors, the species immediately stopped fighting, and within a decade, the Illarreen nations had united and formed a planetary Poss'Nomin government in order to become a part of the galactic community and adopt galactic technology.[3]

The Galactic Republic financed the society of Illarreen's adoption of galactic technology, which was a practice that stopped after the rise of the Galactic Empire[3] in 19 BBY.[5] Afterward, the planetary economy stagnated, and, in order to raise funds for its revitalization, the Poss'Nomin government auctioned off expansive tracts of publicly owned land. Those territories were mostly acquired by influential offworld mining companies,[3] and at some point mining operations were set up on Illarreen's surface.[4]

Illarreen was the homeworld of the Poss'Nomin, a species of three-eyed, omnivorous bulky[3] humanoids.[6] A century before the Galactic Civil War, the Poss'Nomin had formed several nations that each had differing priorities and forms of government. After the species' first contact with off-worlders, those nations formed a global government in which quasi-independent regional governments held most of the authority.[3]

At the time of the first contact, the Poss'Nomin had begun experimenting with atomic energy, and over the following century, approximately one-third of Illarreen's population—mostly in the planet's more affluent regions—adopted galactic standard technology. That change had a significant effect on the Poss'Nomin, who began fundamentally restructuring their facilities and even way of thinking as a result. However, the process of technological adoption was also highly expensive, and, after offworld funding for it dried up, a substantial gap widened between wealthy and poor Poss'Nomin. Afterward, many Poss'Nomin, who, as a species, harbored a psychological predisposition toward adventure-seeking and exploration originating in their early history, left behind their homeworld and its depressed economy in order to travel throughout the wider galaxy.[3]

Locations

The island continent Vhin was located in Illarreen's northern hemisphere, and its eastern coastal region possessed an abundance of natural resources. However, at some point drastic climate changes rendered Vhin's eastern shores uninhabitable.[3]

Behind the scenes

Illarreen was first mentioned in "Alien Encounters," a feature written by Trevor J. Wilson and Craig Robert Carey and published in the August 1997 fourteenth issue of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Illarreen system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square T-16.[2]
