"Now I know what's with those rogue droids! That crazy HK AI had those things trying to help him get his body back and now they're trying to help him get off the planet!"
―A spacer[7]

A battle took place in a volcano crater on the planet Mustafar between a group of spacers working for Mensix Corp and the remnants of HK-47's droid army during the Galactic Civil War. Although HK-47 himself survived the battle, the complete destruction of his droid army definitively halted his droid revolution on Mustafar.

Prelude

"The droid army is gone, but did you stop the problem at its source?"
"The droid factory is offline, but HK-47 was nowhere to be seen."
"That would explain the strange signals we have been monitoring from the volcano crater. We managed to decipher the signal, and it sounds like someone is trying to flag down a passing ship. It must be HK-47."
Milo Mensix and a spacer[6]

Some time during the Old Republic era, a Hammerhead-class cruiser crashed on the planet Mustafar.[8] One of the cruiser's passengers was HK-47,[1] an assassin droid that served the Sith Lord Darth Revan during the Jedi Civil War.[9] Centuries later, during the Clone Wars, Neimoidian Separatists discovered the wreck of the cruiser.[10] They excavated the wreckage[11] and discovered HK-47. When the Separatist engineers realized that the droid's technology was superior than anything they knew, they reactivated HK-47. However, the droid was too dangerous and the Neimoidian engineers were forced to transfer his memory and thought patterns into a sub-system of the crashed cruiser. Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray later ordered the construction of a droid factory on Mustafar in order to produce an army of battle droids based on HK-47's technology. Unfortunately for the Separatists, the construction of the droid factory was only achieved in the last days of the Clone Wars and the new battle droid models were never deployed. In the meantime, HK-47 remained conscious but stuck in the ruined system of the wrecked Old Republic cruiser.[1]

Two decades later, during the Galactic Civil War, a group of spacers working for Mensix Corp explored the wreckage of the Old Republic cruiser when they discovered the artificial intelligence of a droid trapped in a computer.[12] HK-47 tricked the spacers into helping him to escape the ship's computer. The spacers accepted and followed HK-47's instructions to transfer his AI to the old Separatist droid factory.[13] However, they soon realized that they inadvertently allowed HK-47 to reactivate the factory and take control of a large droid army. Furious at having been stuck in a wreck for so long, the assassin droid wanted to take revenge by destroying all organics on the planet. The droid ordered his army to march toward the Mensix Mining facility, the largest facility of the continent, but the droids were stopped at the Koseyet Mining Camp. After HK-47's droid army was destroyed at the Battle of Koseyet, the spacers raided the droid factory and successfully disabled the facility.[1]

The battle

"Your persistence is most entertaining meatbag. Request: Can I call you my friend? don't let the attempts to kill you confuse that point as I try to kill all organics, but I do not believe any of the organics I have known are still around in this time. I will think of you and tell someone they remind me of my friend before I blast them, it will be great fun."

After loosing his army and his droid factory, HK-47 gathered his last forces in a volcano crater and broadcasted a distress signal in order to flag down a passing ship and escape the planet. The head of Mensix Corp, Milo Mensix, considered that HK-47 was too dangerous to be allowed to leave Mustafar and tasked the spacers to destroy the droid once for all. Mensix then hired the pilot Menddle, the only pilot in the area who was crazy enough to drop the spacers in the volcano crater.[6]

After arriving in the crater, the spacers realized that HK-47 had managed to contact a YT-2400 light freighter and was about to escape the planet. The adventurers headed to the landing area by progressing through a narrow band of land surrounded by lava. On their way, they had to fight five waves of droids send against them by HK-47. The first wave was made of the HK-Taskmaster and its SK-21 support droids, the second encompassed AK-Prime and HK-77 assault droids, the third included the Forward Commander Mk II and HK-77 assault droids, the fourth was made of the CY-M Prototype and Kubaza beetles, the fifth was made of the GK Oppressor, GK-14 Defenders and GK-18 Sentinels. The spacers heroically destroyed the five waves of droids, continuing their progression in the volcano.[6]

The adventurers eventually arrived at the freighter where they were attacked by HK-47 himself, along with his escort of SK-21 support droids, GK-14 Defenders and AK-3 "Reaper" droids. The spacers fought the droids and finally demolished all of them. HK-47 was also apparently destroyed in the battle.[6]

Aftermath

"I must admit that you almost make me wish I still needed a good master...almost. Your little grey brain must be getting confused at this point...I understand that happens a lot with your kind. I didn't survive for four thousand years in the husk of a ship just to be destroyed by a few lucky shots."
―HK-47[6]

The destruction of HK-47's army definitively removed the threat of the vindictive droids to Milo Mensix and his miners. However, contrary to appearances, HK-47 was not destroyed in the battle in the battle in a volcano crater. Despite his damages, the old assassin droid survived the clash and successfully escaped the planet Mustafar. Impressed by the abilities of the spacers who defeated him, HK-47 later sent a threatening message to them, revealing his survival and exposing his intentions: retaliate against the Neimodians and some other enemies in the galaxy; and eventually take his revenge on the spacers.[6]

Behind the scenes

The battle in a volcano crater appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[6] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[14] The battle was added to the game with the release of the expansion pack Trials of Obi-Wan on November 1, 2005. It was the final battle of the "Champion of Mustafar" quest line.[6]

  5. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
