  9. Enochf should have been hosting "He Should Be An Admin!" over the last year or so. I'll let others play with their building blocs; I'd be more than happy to have Enochf as a co-admin. In fact, it's almost embarrassing to have been made an admin before him. Sent before my time into this breathing world scarce half made up, and all that. Thefourdotelipsis 07:53, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
    • Blocs? Huh, last time I checked, other users were allowed to vote however they saw fit. I guess voicing one's opinion means they play with blocs, and whatnot ;) God forbid another user does something certain users don't agree with :P And, last time I checked, Graestan wasn't in IRC trying to convince others to vote against a userrights request on this page, like others have been known to do. Regardless, that's all I have to, and will, say on this topic. Greyman(Talk) 05:29, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Optional candidate Q&A

1. Why do you want to become an administrator?

Mostly, because I've been asked several times, and (cut and paste) it's getting tiresome having to go on IRC and request admins to do things when I could just as well take care of it myself.

2. In your opinion, what is the role of an administrator?

Honestly, I think it depends on the administrator. Seems to me every one of us brings skills & personality traits to the table. Some of us are hard-nosed and willing to deal with the most troublesome of trolls, some of us are just around all the time to answer questions and take requests. I'm around quite a bit and could use admin skills to tidy up vandalism, clean up duplicate images, and so forth. The empathy and patience I have with new users would be useful, I think. The site needs immigration to keep expanding, and new users show up with a lot of enthusiasm and very little experience, and a welcoming environment does wonders. Sometimes just not ignoring them is all the encouragement they need.

3. In your view, do administrators hold a technical or political position?

Depends. Seems to me the admins are a council of elders, each one a kind of subcommittee unto him/herself. Mine would be an organizational thing, like a traffic court judge, taking care of the tiny little issues on a day-to-day basis, and occasionally joining in a vote, when requested. Admins can take it upon themselves to perform major reorganization efforts (like adding image categories, merging Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, tweaking the format of the front page), but first make sure there's a consensus to do so.

4. How do you feel admins should use their power/stand in comparison with other users?

Well, they've got to have more authority. I've been around to know that an admin who goes around misusing their delete/revert/ban powers can successfully be challenged by other admins, so we're not little tin gods. Allow my next answer to illustrate.

5. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

Like my userbox says:

Other Information
Jarjaraotc copy Mesa give up! When this user does something stupid and is 100% wrong and finally realizes it, he will own up. Life's easier that way for everybody.

Observe this exchange: Wookieepedia:Quote of the Day/25 February 2007. My complaint may seem baffling at first, but it was due to a misreading of the quote on my part. I'd gotten as far as to stand on my college degree before finally realizing the stupid mistake I'd made and still owned up.

Or how about this? More recently, I noted what appeared at first glance to be a suspicious edit to Caravan of Courage. I skimmed the edits, posted the changes on IRC and asked if I should revert, got a response that the edits seemed odd, and click, reverted it. The editor responded, I responded back, and after a more thorough reading, I un-reverted. The edits were kosher after all.

This isn't to say I'm wrong all the time, but the important bit is this: when I realize I'm in the wrong, my stubbornness and pride evaporate, and the issue resolves.

6. Of your articles or contributions to Wookieepedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?

Well, management of Quote of the Day, mostly. I'm not an article writer with an eye towards putting featured articles on the front page, but I think Marcha's Estate, the Selonian cone ship, and Starwoids illustrate I can pull a decent article together.

7. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with?

Deletions and bans are the ones I could use most, and only with the obvious vandalism. In gray-area cases, I'll bring it up first on IRC or user_talk, the same way I do now without admin powers.

8. How important is it for you to be involved in things such as CT, IDrive, FA, and other community-centered items that involve discussion and voting?

I stop by FA every now and then to reward our more prolific article writers. IDrive is gone, but most of the FA-pushers have their own targets of expansion anyway. You'll see my name crop up in CTs and VFDs. I've got no radical plans at the moment.

9. Do you think admins performing actions (I.e. deletions, blocks, etc.) for reasons not covered on policy should be sanctioned/punished? If so, how?

We deal with it when it happens. I watched this happen with Nebulax, remember. Trust me, no answer I can give here will make things any easier when people start talking sanctions for an admin. I've seen admins ban each other and then unban themselves.

10. What is your policy, if any, of welcoming new users? Should you welcome a new user, do you look at his/her contributions beforehand? What about anonymous IPs?

New users are great. Whenever possible, I look at this place from the perspective of a newbie. If it's loading slow, that drives away newbies. If it's filled with spelling errors, or if the pictures don't line up with the paragraphs, that drives away detail-oriented newbies. If the regulars are too quiet or too grumpy on IRC, that drives away sensitive newbies. Hey, now that you mention it, there's another thing I'll probably do a lot of as an admin. Find the new users that are actually doing positive things and let 'em know they're helping. Anonymous IPs do need watching, but less than half are actively disruptive.

11. How would you react if someone undeleted an article you'd mistakenly speedied? Under what circumstances would you consider it appropriate to undelete an article mistakenly speedied by another administrator, if any, and how would you approach this task?

Usually it's obvious whether it needs to be deleted or not. I'd always ask if it's a gray area sort of thing. And how would I react?

12. How would you react if your user page was vandalized? Under what circumstances would you block the offender? Is there anything else that you would do in this situation?

I wouldn't treat it any different than any other vandalism. Repeat offenses would be punished with increasing block times. Unless the vandal is an irate admin, there shouldn't be a problem, and if that's the issue, we fall back on question #9. That sort of thing's a mess.

13. Under what circumstances would you consider blocking an established user?

I'd probably need the consensus of about five or six established admins before feeling confident enough to do it. Objectivity is scarce in an online community.

14. If you could change any one thing about Wookieepedia, what would it be?

I personally would get rid of the various silly "noun" articles like faucet, but I realize I'm in the minority on that one, so I won't be attempting any radical changes.

15. Would you look at a glass to be half-empty or half-full?

Half-full. Unless I'm depressed.

16. Do you feel the current blocking policy is too restrictive, not restrictive enough, or OK as it is?

Too ill-defined. Like real life, it depends which judge you get. I've seen admins punish multiple-offense vandalism with single-day blocks. I'll be the by-the-letter kind of judge. Just like I cross out votes on QOTD unless they have the requisite 50 edits, then un-cross them when the qualify, I'll ban users precisely depending on their number of offenses. And I'll only count the offenses that qualify as offenses, not gray-area stuff that could be honest mistakes.

17. Have you ever considered becoming a regular visitor to the Wookieepedia IRC chat?

Yes.

18. How do you feel about people who already have some influence on other Star Wars communities (TheForce.Net, StarWars.com) trying to change policies here?

Um, not sure that's even been an issue recently. But I realize that not every redlinked newbie here is quite the neophyte they may appear to be. They could be visitors from another wiki with plenty of experience. It usually shows in their writing style. If they bring crossover appeal, wonderful. If they bring contentiousness, they don't get credit for work elsewhere.

19. How many clones do you think fought in the Clone Wars? (Note: You are wrong no matter what answer you give.)

I keep falling asleep trying to count them.

20. Who is the most awesome Jedi of all time? (Note: The only correct answer is Kyle Katarn.)

Um, Kyle Katarn.

21. Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?

Nope.

22. What's more important to you: consensus or policy?

Honestly, at the stage we're at, consensus seems the better way to go.

23. Have you had any previous leadership experience (in your community, on the web, etc.)?

Eh... well, I did manage a Civilization III suggestion thread on the Apolyton site way back in the day. Come to think of it, I had to deal with a troublesome individual back then, too. Odd fellow who spoke English as a second language and called me names and wrote odd fanfic featuring me as a foolish person. And I hung around with the MST3K cappers from "Caption This!" for a while, but that fell through after I broke up with one of the cappers. That shouldn't be an issue here, as I don't plan on falling in love with any of you.

  • Nominating Enochf. Candidate accepted in IRC. Reasons in favor: Operates QotD with admirable efficiency. Categorizes images like a machine. Long-time user in good standing with the community. Already passed RfRollback. Reasons against: None I can think of. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 14:40, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Sure, why not? Let's start an official request for adminship. Reasons to support me:
    • I've been around and editing since mid-July 2006, with very few lapses. I'm hooked and not leaving anytime soon.
    • I'm an all-rounder, uploading images, writing articles, fixing grammar, adding categories, tweaking code. What I lack in sheer volume of article creations and expansions, I make up for in well-roundedness.
    • Quote of the Day is sort of my own little kingdom. Not that the place would fall apart without me, but it'd get a lot messier.
    • There was The Great Typo Hunt a while back. That was a good idea, right?
    • Most people assume I'm an admin already. Really, who'd even notice the difference if I were?
    • I've had rollback powers for quite a while.
    • My userboxes are catchy.
    • Um, I was Wookieepedian of the Month once... well, actually, I tied with Kuralyov, but that's only because of the partisanship of the Russian judges.
    • I'm relatively kind to newbies. Somebody around here's gotta be.
    • Oh, and most important, it's getting tiresome having to go on IRC and request admins to do things when I could just as well take care of it myself.
    • There. That should be enough. Enochf 14:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
      • Actually, I've been curious about your answers to some of the questions, so I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to fill out the questionnaire for us. Graestan(Talk) 02:21, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
        • What, the whole thing? I thought I managed to cover most of the serious ones. Give me the numbers, I'll expound. Enochf 02:56, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
          • I find that response very passive-aggressive and non-committal. I'm sorry you feel that way. Graestan(Talk) 03:05, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
            • Glad to have my curiosity quenched, and happy to have you on the team. Graestan(Talk) 19:14, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Just a small note. Faucet is canon. Please don't mess with those. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:40, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
