She's already been made Wookieepedian of the Month and has demonstrated an ability to produce some very good articles, with three featured articles to her name already. She's been very active during her time here and her contributions show that she keeps an eye open on the recent changes, often reverting bad edits and warning users. As a member of the AgriCorps, she has demonstrated an ability to take on responsibility, frequently archiving nominations and informing users of the results. From my dealings with her on IRC, I've found her to be a level headed and committed user and I think she'll make a fine addition to the administration. Her gentle yet firm brand of leadership earned her control of WookieeProject Knights of the Old Republic, and her cool competence and dedication made her a shoo-in for the AgriCorps; to both groups she is among the most committed users. Her user talk edits reflect an individual of considerable patience yet assertiveness. Cylka patrols recent changes, reverts bad edits, warns and assists users where appropriate.   1. Why do you want to become an administrator?
    • Ever since I began regularly contributing to Wookieepedia, I have been doing what I can to improve the quality of the site. This has included helping other users, manipulating articles, and dealing with vandals. However, many times, I have found my efforts somewhat hampered by my lack of access to various utilities. With these additional tools at my disposal, I will be able to not only continue with site improvements, but I will be able to expand my capabilities. I think that my past record has shown that I am more than willing to make an effort in raising the quality of Wookieepedia.
  2. In your opinion, what is the role of an administrator?
    • To me, the role of an administrator is primarily one of leading by example in order to ensure a quality site. This means following established policies regarding article edits and behavior towards other site members. Of course, an administrator has other responsibilities that involve technical aspects, but I personally feel that an administrator doesn't have the right to ask something of a user that they themselves don't practice.
  3. In your view, do administrators hold a technical or political position?
    • I know that many others have said this before, but I believe that administrators hold both positions. Administrators are the individuals that are given the tools to maintain the technical quality of the site, whether by managing articles or restricting vandals. Politically, administrators are the individuals that other users turn to for answers and guidance.
  4. How do you feel admins should use their power/stand in comparison with other users?
    • I honestly don't think that an administrator is more important than any other user when it comes to opinions or article editing. Administrators are simply regular users that have shown that they are willing and capable of handling additional responsibilities, and have subsequently been given additional tools to aid them. However, administrators are often looked upon as the leaders of a site, and as such, they need to be more neutral and patient with someone that may come to them for help.
  5. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
    • In a large and diverse community such as Wookieepedia, it is difficult to say that conflicts—in varying degrees—don't exist. With members from a number of different countries and cultures, it is inevitable that people will have differing views. I have not been involved in anything that could be considered a significant conflict with another member, but rather more of a “difference of opinion.” In such cases, I did my utmost best to discuss the issues with the other person, exchange points of view, and reach a compromise, if necessary. However, at one point, I did feel unduly stressed by another user, and after it became apparent that the situation could not, or would not be resolved, I chose to cut off communication rather than to allow the hostilities to continue. I felt that that option would be the least disruptive, and would allow everyone to simply continue with their work.
  6. Of your articles or contributions to Wookieepedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
    • This is a difficult question to answer since I try to take pride in all of my work on Wookieepedia. I am leader of the WookieeProject Knights of the Old Republic, and I have written Featured and Good articles, but I think that what I'm most proud of is my work with the AgriCorps. As an AC member, I feel that it is my responsibility to review as many articles as possible on the GAN page, even if I may not be particularly interested in the subject. By doing so, I have discovered that the quality of my own writing has improved. I have also had the satisfaction of seeing the quality of writing increase in editors new to the GAN page. In most cases, not only will these users will go on to write FA caliber material, but they will also help raise the overall article quality on the site.
  7. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with?
    • A lot of my time on Wookieepedia has been spent on maintenance type edits, and I expect that I will continue to do so with sysops by focusing mostly on orphaned and new pages. I also spend time watching the RCs, so I expect to catch vandalism and ban when needed. For the most part, I will fill in where it is needed the most.
  8. How important is it for you to be involved in things such as CT, FA, GA, and other community-centered items that involve discussion and voting?
    • I think it is important for any regular contributor to be involved in community-centered issues. As I stated earlier, I am a very active AC member, and I try to make sure that I catch any new CT or TC threads. However, if I feel that I don't have a good grasp of the issue in question, I will refrain from voting. I don't believe in voting simply for the sake of voting.
  9. Do you think admins performing actions (I.e. deletions, blocks, etc.) for reasons not covered on policy should be sanctioned/punished? If so, how?
    • Quite obviously, if an administrator has blatantly and repeatedly violated policies, then there needs to be some sort of disciplinary action. Otherwise, this is something that needs to be examined on a case by case basis. It is improbable that any policy will cover every unique situation, and I believe that administrators should have the flexibility to interpret a policy to suit these situations. I also believe that if an administrator goes too far, a complaint will be made, and the matter will be investigated. Finally, if necessary, appropriate measures will be taken.
  10. What is your policy, if any, of welcoming new users? Should you welcome a new user, do you look at his/her contributions beforehand? What about anonymous IPs?
    • I can't say that I have a specific policy for welcoming new users. I am always willing to help anyone that has any questions, and from my work the GAN page, I tend to have random users ask me for help or advice. I do watch the RCs, and if I see a new user creating a number of articles, or making substantial edits, I will often look those articles over. If the user seems to be consistently making the same mistake, I drop a note on their talk page explaining the problem, and then leave some pointers. At some point, we all were new users, and it takes time to learn and remember all of Wookieepedia's policies.
  11. How would you react if someone undeleted an article you'd mistakenly speedied? Under what circumstances would you consider it appropriate to undelete an article mistakenly speedied by another administrator, if any, and how would you approach this task?
    • If someone undeleted an article I had deleted, I would simply go to that person and ask them for the reason. I wouldn't see a reason to get upset until I knew the situation. It's possible that either one or the other side made a mistake. If I undeleted an article, I would make sure that I left some kind of explanation in the summary, and then I would leave a note on their talk page, or talk to them in IRC, explaining my reasoning in depth.
  12. How would you react if your user page was vandalized? Under what circumstances would you block the offender? Is there anything else that you would do in this situation?
    • I don't think that my user page is more important than any other user page on the site. If it was an honest mistake by a new user, I would undo the edit if necessary, and leave them a message. If it was a blatant case of vandalism, I would simply undo the vandalism and follow our warning and/or blocking policies, depending on which one was appropriate.
  13. Under what circumstances would you consider blocking an established user?
    • I don't feel that an established user should be treated differently than a new user. Quite the contrary, an established user has been around long enough to understand and learn Wookieepedia policy. If there are blatant policy violations, the user should be dealt with accordingly.
  14. If you could change any one thing about Wookieepedia, what would it be?
    • I can't say that any one thing about Wookieepedia stands out as needing to be changed.
  15. Would you look at a glass to be half-empty or half-full?
    • I think that in general, I see the glass as being half-full. But like all people, I have my good and bad days, so I know that I have seen the glass half-empty, especially when there are 30 nominations waiting to be reviewed :P
  16. Do you feel the current blocking policy is too restrictive, not restrictive enough, or OK as it is?
    • I believe that the blocking policy is fine as it is. I can't say that I have noticed any significant abuses of the current policy.
  17. Have you ever considered becoming a regular visitor to the Wookieepedia IRC chat?
    • Hmm, well yes, I do believe that I have considered this in the past, and now I wonder if I don't spend too much time there...
  18. How do you feel about people who already have some influence on other Star Wars communities (TheForce.Net, StarWars.com) trying to change policies here?
    • If these people are regular contributors to Wookieepedia, then there isn't a problem. There is nothing stopping people from being active contributors to more than one site. I believe that only Wookieepedians should have the right to influence policy.

    • I'll go with “more than one.”

    • Oh! Oh! I know this one! It's that guy... Kytarr?... Kartna?... um... Katarn?
  21. Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?
    • Well, I do come from a country that was heavily subjugated by the Communists. I believe that may have colored my opinion of them.
  22. What's more important to you: consensus or policy?
    • I tend to be a stickler for policy, but I can't say that consensus is any less important. It is consensus that approves the policies, and it is consensus that will amend or eliminate the policies.
  23. Have you had any previous leadership experience (in your community, on the web, etc.)?
    • I have had numerous leadership experiences starting with being an elected official in various clubs and organizations in high school, leading all the way through graduate school. For the past few years I have been working as a teacher and private tutor. And as I have mentioned earlier, here on Wookieepedia, I am project lead for WookieeProject Knights of the Old Republic, and a member of the AgriCorps.
  24. What is your attitude towards users who have quit the site or have been banned, but still continue to attempt to influence the site in any way?
    • First of all, I would like to apologize for my delay in answering this question, but since there has been a bit of controversy surrounding this subject lately, I wanted to take my time to think this through. When it comes to users that have been banned, either permanently or for extended periods, I do not believe that they have any right to influence the site. I realize that there will be times when not everyone will agree with a particular ban, but I also believe that if a ban was truly unjustified, it would be lifted. A permanent ban is a serious matter, and I would like to believe that they are not given out lightly. For those users who have been permabanned, I can't find any justification for them to be able to have any influence, directly or indirectly, on Wookieepedia. As for those users who have been banned for an extended period of time, I think that once they come back, they will show that they are capable of being constructive members, and thus regain their right to affect the site, or they will continue to disrupt, which will lead to a permanent ban.
    • The second part of this question is a bit trickier since it was the user who decided to leave, for their own reasons, as opposed to being banned due to disruptions. However, I still don't feel that this is enough justification for them to be able to have any influence on the site. By deciding to leave the site, they have effectively said that they do not care about the site, so therefore, they shouldn't have a say. If a member had simply needed or wanted a break, they could have taken a vacation instead of choosing to leave. If there is a situation in which a former user becomes active again, I feel that they can once again have a right to influence the site, but only if they are in fact actively contributing again. In the end, I believe that only active uses should have any say on Wookieepedia. I see absolutely no reason for someone to be able to come in and change anything around if they don't put any work into maintaining the site.
