"What intrigued me was the fact that the feigned attack was already in progress when we emerged from hyperspace. That suggested to me that the aliens had a way of predicting when and where a ship would arrive."
"And this is what allowed them to do that?"
"We believe so, yes, the lattice was built into the space between the freighter's inner and outer hulls and was attached to the equipment boxes via those cables."
―Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo to Supreme General Ba'kif[1]

The Watith, a species from the Unknown Regions had access to a type of hyperspace prediction technology which the Chiss believed could be built into the Watith's freighters. Around 18 BBY,[2] The a Watith freighter called the Saltbarrel had one such lattice built into the space between the inner and outer hulls. The lattice was at least four meters long and consisted of white metal ribs which resembled the torso of a huge sea monster.[1]

That year, an engagement between the Saltbarrel and the Chiss heavy cruiser Springhawk resulted in the capture of the freighter, the death of its crew and the sequential destruction of the Saltbarrel.[3] However before the frieghter's destruction the crew of the Springhawk removed as much the lattice as they could for further study. Which they ultimately brought it to the Chiss's Universal Analysis Group on the planet Sposia and presented to the Stybla family patriarch Stybla'mi'ovodo and Supreme General Ba'kif. Having just a portion of the lattice, the exact usage and limits of the device were unknown to the Chiss at that time.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Watith's hyperspace prediction lattice was first mentioned in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, written by Timothy Zahn as the third installment in the Star Wars: Ascendancy Trilogy.[1]
