"First, you must be patient with yourself."
―Varna offers advice[1]

Varna was an Andraven wellagrin trainer on the planet Andraven. Around 233 BBY, the trainer oversaw the locals Gumar Adraki and Jam as they led visiting Jedi younglings on a mission to help a herd of wellagrins migrate. Varna offered advice before they left and welcomed them at the other end of their journey. They later attended Visitor's Day on the planet Tenoo and the annual wellagrin egg hatching on Andraven. Later in 232 BBY, Varna commenced the Ancestors Circuit tradition on Andraven for Adraki and was later proud of him when he completed it successfully.

Biography

"Now, remember. Stay close to the trail to avoid any avalanches."
―Varna cautions the group[1]

Varna[1] was an Andraven[3] wellagrin trainer[4] who resided in a village[2] on the snowy planet Andraven with fellow villagers Gumar Adraki and Jam during the High Republic Era.[1] Around 233 BBY,[5] when the wellagrins were ready to migrate to the other side of a mountain to have access to more food, Varna, Adraki, and Jam were joined by a trio of Jedi younglings: Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, and Nubs. The younglings began by learning to ride the wellagrins, at which Solay was adept but with which the other two struggled. Varna began giving advice regarding patience with oneself, but the trainer's comlink then activated—the Jedi's master, Jedi Master Zia Zanna, was calling. Zanna thanked Varna for hosting the Jedi and asked how they were doing; the trainer told her that they were adjusting well and ready to help the wellagrins migrate.[1]

Before they left, Varna cautioned the group to stay close to the trail, avoid avalanches, and be at the orchard to which they were going before dark due to the night's snowstorms. They thus departed while the Jedi's friend Nash Durango took Varna to the orchard in her starship, the Crimson Firehawk. Before nightfall, the Jedi, villagers, and wellagrins came sliding down the mountain into the orchard, propelled by an avalanche they had accidentally caused. Nearly crashing into Varna and Durango, their mission was a success—Varna ensured everyone was alright. That night, they sat surrounding a heater as Solay recounted the day's events. Zanna—via hologram—and Varna told the younglings they were proud of them, assuring the Jedi they were welcome to Andraven whenever they wished.[1]

Varna, Adraki, and Jam later visited the Jedi on their planet of Tenoo for Visitor's Day, when individuals from all over the galaxy came to visit.[6] Sometime afterward on Andraven, Varna attended the annual hatching of the wellagrin eggs alongside Adraki, Jam, and the three younglings.[7] Later in 232 BBY,[8] Varna was on Andraven for the Ancestors Circuit, an Andraven tradition honoring the ancestors who had first settled their world. Varna indicated the start of the event with their flute, telling Adraki that he had three challenges to complete before sundown before sending him on his way. Much later in the day, Varna was shocked when Adraki returned to the starting area riding a zaba wolf, which had not been seen in for a long time on Andraven. Varna then moved forward to stroke the creature, praising Adraki for his work.[9] At some point afterward, Varna gathered with several other villagers and the three Jedi younglings to meet with the Gozzo Raxlo after he had finished repairing his tenga rock mining machine to thank him for both his heroism and for helping the village.[2]

Personality and traits

"Gumar Adraki. Welcome to the Andraven Ancestors Circuit. Today you will face three challenges, each reflecting the experience of our ancestors. You have until sundown to complete them. Best of luck."
―Varna[1]

Varna gave the children advice and guidance for their mission and was sure to check on them after they had completed it.[1] The Andraven was proud of Adraki when he completed the Ancestors Circuit and praised him.[9] Varna had yellow eyes, gray skin, gray hair, and was a member of the sentient trunked Andraven species.[1]

Equipment

Varna donned a tricolored hat with pompoms on its sides, a matching maroon dress, and mittens.[1] The Andraven also possessed a kao reed flute.[9]

Behind the scenes

Varna first appeared in "Lys and the Snowy Mountain Rescue," the first part of the fourth episode of the animated series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures's first season.[1] The episode was released on May 4, 2023.[10] Varna was voiced by Sharon Muthu.[1]

  5. The second season of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures spans the dedication of the Starlight Beacon (which appears in the season one finale "The Prince and the Pirate") and the mission to Vrant Tarnum (which appears in "Yoda Rescue"), both of which are dated to 232 BBY by Star Wars: Timelines. The Season Two episodes "The Great Gomgourd Quest" and "The Missing Life Day Feast" take place one year after the Season One episodes "The Harvest Feast" and "Life Day," placing those episodes in 233 BBY. Season One begins around the same year, meaning that the first half of Young Jedi Adventures Season One, which includes "Lys and the Snowy Mountain Rescue," takes place around 233 BBY.
