The Valken-38 blaster rifle was a blaster/sniper rifle and weapon of choice of the Corellian bounty hunter Dengar. He used it to kill or wound his prey from a long distance.
Behind the scenes
The Valken-38 carbine is referenced in the Dawn of the Bounty Hunters book (Chronicle, 2000), and the Valken-38 rifle is featured in the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game Galactic Hunters edition (fixed card #21), from 2009.
Earlier, production images from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back show Dengar holding a WWII-era German MG 42 (Maschinengewehr 42) machine gun with the bipod and buttstock removed. And in pre-production photos, Dengar is seen with a slightly modified MG 34 (Maschinengewehr 34), which is the base weapon identified 'in universe' as both the W-90 concussion rifle and DLT-19 heavy blaster rifle. When it came time to shoot the movie, however, the MG 34 ended up in the hands of 4-LOM. Neither of these weapons, though, is explicitly identified as the Valken-38.
