Valek was a human that did business in the Worker's District of the city of Canto Bight on the planet Cantonica.[1] In 3 ABY,[2] a friend of Valek left him a datapad with a the name of the fathier that would win the Canto Cup race; however, business was so good during the event that he could not leave to place a bet on any of the betting tables.[1]
The thief Kay Vess, one of Valek's aquaintances, approached him while he sat on the floor outside a building during the race and asked about business. When he explained his predicament, Vess offered to place the bet for him as a friend. Valek excitedly agreed, directing Vess to the datapad and handing her twenty credits to bet. Vess then left and used the tip to bet on the fathiers, but kept all of the credits for herself, admitting that she almost felt bad about stealing from Valek but rationalizing that she needed the money more than him.[1]
