Celebration V

Hey, Riffs. With Celebration V being announced, would you be interested in writing a short announcement on it for the Wookieepedia Newsnet. Let me know :-). Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 16:39, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

  • I'll see what I can do, Grun. :) -- Riffsyphon1024 16:39, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
    • Email me and give me the email address you used to sign up for the Newsnet and I'll add your account on there as a contributor :). Grunny (Talk) 16:51, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
      • I sent the email, however its difficult for me to say if it got through. Otherwise just use the one I have posted on my user page (same one) towards the bottom. -- Riffsyphon1024 17:13, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
        • I got the email and have added you as a contributor. When you're logged in, you should see "New Post" up the top left. Click that to start writing your post. Take a look at some of the other posts to get an idea of formatting and so forth. Let me know when you've posted it and I'll confirm the post so it can go up :-). Grunny (Talk) 17:19, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
          • Okay, I'm currently writing the post. It might be short. -- Riffsyphon1024 17:38, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
            • That's fine, thanks Riffs :-). Grunny (Talk) 17:39, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
              • Submitted. Check it over. -- Riffsyphon1024 17:45, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
  • I edited it a little to add a few links and an image, so here it is :-). Thanks again, Riffs. Grunny (Talk) 18:04, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
    • Yes, that is what I was striving for. Thanks much Grunny! :) -- Riffsyphon1024 18:14, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

Deleterevision

Hey Riffsyphon1024. The bureaucrat group will soon have a new right added to it on Wookieepedia, deleterevision. This allows us to hide revisions from public view. This should only be used to hide inappropriate or offensive material such as particularly vulgar username creations, usernames revealing users real names, edits revealing real names or posting real-life images of user, and copyright violations where the page history is too big to restore revisions individually. On page histories and in logs you will see a (show/hide) button on the left hand side, which will look something like this:

(show/hide) 04:04, December 8, 2009 Grunny (Talk | contribs | block) m (9,714 bytes)

Use common sense when it comes to this tool as to when it should be used, as misuse will result in the right being removed and the wrath of sannse :P. Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 04:47, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

  • Okay, the right has now been added so you should start seeing the (show/hide) button in histories, diffs and logs :). Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 22:37, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

SW T-shirt

You probably don't remember, but way back when, when we were discussing the montage of Wookieepedian images for use at Celebration IV, but you made a comment about wanting a shirt like the one I had that displayed this image on it. • No problem Esjs. Yours was the most readily available and so I went with it, but of course discussed it with users on wiki and IRC before the update. We plan to keep it up a week if that's alright. :) -- Riffsyphon1024 07:14, March 8, 2010 (UTC)

Where could I post a link

Hi Riff! Like Terminator Wiki, we've recently reached 1000 articles over at Xenopedia, the Alien vs. Predator Wiki. Is there an appropriate spot on the Wook to post a link? We're still starting out and the dream is to bring Xenopedia up to the standard set by Wookieepedia. Thanks for your time!---CadmiumX99 06:05, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

  • Cadmium, if you wanted to do something on an official sense, first you would have to submit a request at Wookieepedia:Official Friends of Wookieepedia. However, as Xenopedia is not really related to Star Wars, I do believe you will have some difficulty in creating a public link to your wiki, but you can still post a link on your user page. I do wish you the best of luck with your project. -- Riffsyphon1024 02:38, July 6, 2010 (UTC)
    • Thanks Riff, I'll check it out. Maybe Terminator Wiki and Xenopedia could be Official Friends? (James Cameron connection, Stan Winston, not to mention the AvPvT comic!) Grazie tanto!---CadmiumX99 03:25, July 6, 2010 (UTC)

infoboxes

Dear Riffsyphon1024,

I like the Wookiepedia's infoboxes and would like to know if I can use them for my wiki. I will give credit to Wookiepedia for them but I need a good one on my wiki and I don't know how and Wikia Help doesn't work. Do you think that you can at least teach me how to make my infoboxes look similar or the same?

Thanks and May The Force Be With You,

Cam12343 Head Admin & Creator of The Lightsaber Wiki

  • While I admire your willingness to ask about the boxes in advance, I personally do not sense there is much need for a Lightsaber Wiki. Looking through it, many of the articles are not really about lightsabers, and what information might be presented can already be found here. However I cannot stop you from editing your own wiki. If you are to make articles on lightsabers, I should recommend that you use the lightsaber infobox (and from what I know, you can use it on another Wikia). However your wiki might not be set up to properly display the graphics as does on this wiki, as it requires a certain form of code to round the edges and expand. Hope that helps. -- Riffsyphon1024 09:28, August 4, 2010 (UTC)

Pictures, referenced?

Hey Riff, quick question. I am wondering if the infobox image itself is supposed to be referenced the way it is on the page Intrepid (Class 1000). I saw that you were online and could possibly answer my question. I know it's a petty correction and all, but that's what I am normally doing.....all the little petty fixes, referencing, sourcing, but it all adds up in the end! I'm Hank by the way, I don't believe I've introduced myself to you yet. TK-299 (Click Here) 20px 09:53, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

Questions

Is it true that you are basically the founder of Wookiepedia or at least the concept or idea? GalenMarek1Leave a comment. 17:24, September 2, 2010 (UTC)

  • Chad Barbry and I are the co-founders of Wookieepedia. I was the first to suggest a wiki on a talk page at Wikipedia, and after deliberation, he was the one that requested Wikicities give us the space. Chad was also the one to suggest the name "Wookieepedia", though in a jokingly manner. I suggested "Wicketpedia", albeit not as good. At the time, the wiki request was in its early stages and not as streamlined as it is today, which is why I found it difficult at the time as how to request it. Once it was up, I was notified by Chad and on March 10, I immediately started to copy articles from Wikipedia to the new space here, under the name Star Wars Wiki. Chad and I initially thought we might just move the articles altogether, but Wikipedia admins stated that Wiki-transfer was unnecessary. Regardless, we were able to grow very fast, with an influx of editors that specialized in the Expanded Universe. Our original articles from Wikipedia were mercilessly edited to an in-universe tense and style format that we could use across the entire wiki, and still do to this day (save for real world articles). Eventually the moniker "Wookieepedia" caught on with the editors, and we have been Wookieepedia ever since. Does that answer your question? :) -- Riffsyphon1024 09:44, September 3, 2010 (UTC)

Welcome Message

Hello. I am an Admin on the Sherlock Holmes wiki. I wanted to know that how can I customize the Welcome Message new editors will get.
Thank you.
--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 19:33, March 7, 2011 (UTC)

  • Well here, our template is at Template:W and in order to display it properly, we type {{subst:W|your user name|~~~~}}. Now, Wikia will sometimes automatically detect a new member and send them the message without any signature, effectively isolating the individual who is being greeted. If you need to, you can copy our code for use on your wiki, alter it to your liking, and then just follow that script to post it on pages, and the auto-template should change as well. Hope this helps. -- Riffsyphon1024 03:40, March 8, 2011 (UTC)
  • So how do I make the message template as default?Thanks--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 10:01, March 8, 2011 (UTC)
    • Well, I notice your template is at Template:Welc, and I see your user name there. The thing is, however, that you want all users to be able to use it with their user names showing up, so the best thing to do would be to copy our template per GNU (hit the edit tab, copy, close the tab, and paste to Template:Welc on your wiki) and then edit to match your content there. Pending everything is transferred correctly, tis will allow the user of the template to enter his or her username and four tildes to personalize it. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:11, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
      • Thanks for the template. I have done as you told. Now as I understand, I must manually put it on New user's talk page. So how will I know if a nw user makes an Edit on a page? Thanks.--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 08:53, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
        • Yes, any user can type {{subst:Welc|their user name|~~~~}} on another user's talk page, and that template will come up completed with signature. As for tracking edits on pages, you can follow the page and that page will show up in your Watchlist. You can also track page changes across your wiki on the Recent Changes page. Hope this helps. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:58, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
          • It seems i was a bit unclear. I meant how will know if a user makes his very first edit on a page i the Wiki.--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 08:59, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
            • You will be able to tell, as their user talk page will show up as red on Recent Changes. Also if you have RC set up to display New Account Creations and the User Avatar Log, those are other ways to see who is coming in. Then you just create the user talk page for them with this template. :) -- Riffsyphon1024 09:46, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
              • If I may butt in: I think usually when person makes their first edit, they will be welcomed by a bot, using MediaWiki:Welcome-message-user. This all is configurable though, see this search as an example how it is around here. (: –Tm_T (Talk) 09:50, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
                • Is that implemented on all wikis though, Tm? I assume that they are just starting out and wouldn't have bots auto-welcoming visitors. Then again... I do have another wiki where this happens... -- Riffsyphon1024 09:53, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
                  • That search I linked shows that by default, all contributors, signed or anonymous, are welcomed with some general text, we have just adjusted it and added nice template. So I would assume unless the admins have turned the thing off, it is happening elsewhere in Wikia too. (: –Tm_T (Talk) 10:00, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
                  • Thanks a lot.So should I add the Welcome Template to the bot page? And no the thing is not turned off by the Admin. By the way, the wiki hasn't just started, but it was inactive for some time as the previous Admin had been on Wikipedia. I requested Adminship for the wiki so that I could get more freedom in with the features.--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 11:19, March 10, 2011 (UTC)
                    • In regards to the bot, that might be a question better suited for Tm_T to answer. I personally do not like the use of bots for welcome messages, as it appears impersonal and doesn't allow an user to follow through to an actual user that can help them. -- Riffsyphon1024 11:31, March 10, 2011 (UTC)

Deletion

A word to the wise, Riff, you might consider choosing more appropriate terminology the next time you decide to undelete an article. Describing something as an "inappropriate deletion" when it was anything but smacks of rudeness and disdain for the administrator who deleted the article originally, not to mention general haughtiness and complete ignorance. The article was never properly sourced and was clearly given the requisite seven-day window to verify its legitimacy before being deleted. The fact that "16 pages link here" means nothing unless a proper source is applied to the article, per our Sourcing and Attribution policies. In other words, the article's deletion was entirely appropriate under the circumstances. That you managed to find a source for the article a week later in no way impugns the correct deletion action that was originally undertaken. Situations like this can understandably be delicate and so, as an administrator, one should duly treat them as such. Maybe try to show a little more consideration for your fellow administrators and community in general in the future. Thanks. Toprawa and Ralltiir 06:29, March 8, 2011 (UTC)

  • Yes T&R, my language was inappropriate, and I shouldn't have been so impulsive in my response. Pardon my activity. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:45, March 8, 2011 (UTC)

Chrelythiumn system

Hi Riff, thanks for correcting my mistake and redirecting the article I made! The source spelled it incorrectly and I wasn't familiar enough with The Clone Wars to realise... Jinzler 15:13, March 16, 2011 (UTC)

  • No problem. The appendix is having its series of hiccups this time around, with misspellings and even half of Y and all of Z missing altogether. I hope that's correct, since it would be very coincidental for there to be another system spelled so closely AND in Wild Space. ;) -- Riffsyphon1024 15:33, March 16, 2011 (UTC)

Highlighting maps

For the Enarc Run image i first composed the maps of the Mid Rim and Expansion Region, which was difficult (for me) because they had a different scale. Once joined I made a duplicate layer, brightened the lower and darkened the upper one. Then I manually erased the "highlightened areas" from the darker layer. The program I used was Paint Shop Pro 9.

All in all I'm not a Photoshop/Digital Art expert, so maybe there are more efficient or different ways of achieveing what you want, but that was how I did it. Dark Guardian 14:43, April 15, 2011 (UTC)

  • Ah, appreciate the tips, DG. I've been messing with the various sector maps myself, and put one together with all the regions (though it is still a tad sloppy around the edges). I'll continue experimentation, and my intention is to have maps for all the sectors and trade routes in the Atlas. -- Riffsyphon1024 22:50, April 15, 2011 (UTC)

Quote of the Day

Could you please tell how does the Quote of the Day in the Main page work?
I wanted to make it changing itself in the Matrix Wiki as it is a static one.
Thank you in advance
--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 14:31, April 16, 2011 (UTC)

  • We have a queue, that is created at least a month in advance per voting at the QOTD project. Once we have a quote, it is configured for the template, which updates every day at UTC 0:00, and whichever quote is highlighted for that day will show up on the Main Page. Check out Template:QOTD for example, look at its code, and you can at least see how it changes with each day, however the process is deeper than just the template. For security reasons, the actual content is hosted elsewhere and then linked through the template. Hope this helps. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:55, April 18, 2011 (UTC)
    • So how can I implement that feature in the Matrix Wiki? And I didn't understand much of the templates.--Nisheeth (Leave message)-- 08:58, April 18, 2011 (UTC)
      • Well, when it comes to coding and templates, better advice would come from my counterpart, Grunny. He is much more advanced in MediaWiki functions and template actions than I and I believe he would be better suited to help you out, if not redirect you to another user even more advanced. -- Riffsyphon1024 09:03, April 18, 2011 (UTC)

"Friend"

Well, I didn't know you guys where my friends... "Anakin Sky"

K26 explosive antivehicle rocket

Hello, I am just coming here to say that according to my interpretation of the page Wookieepedia:What Wookieepedia is not your recent CA K26 explosive antivehicle rocket has a reference that contains information that is against the following rule.

  • In addition, roleplaying numbers and stats for canonical elements will be reverted and/or deleted (since quoting official statistics counts as copyright violation, while unofficial statistics are completely non-canonical.)

In the fourth reference you explicitly state the damage values for the fragmentation grenade and the K26 rocket from the Star Wars: Roleplaying Game sourcebook Arms & Equipment Guide. In my view, this is against the above rule. However, I believe that all you need to do about the reference is to say something along the lines of "In Arms & Equipment Guide the K26 explosive antivehicle rocket deals significantly more damage than the standard fragmentation grenade presented in the book."

  • If I am reading the rule incorrectly please point out my error, but I just thought someone ought to inform you of this. Thank you for your time.

Exiled Jedi 20px (Greetings) 22:27, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • My only question is, does this rule relate to stats in the text --or-- the references at the bottom, where they appear in said article? If the citations are legal, I would like to see a restructuring of that rule to allow for citations, but not the body of the text. So, yeah, going through the process, I hope you can understand that in order to validate all of the information presented, being specific is what we aim for, or at least that was my intention. -- Riffsyphon1024 02:39, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
    • I can't really tell whether it is just not allowed in the body or if it is not allowed in the entire article. I think perhaps we should ask some other users for their opinion on this, because I don't really know where in the article that this rule applies.--Exiled Jedi 20px (Greetings) 02:57, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
      • Btw, I forgot to offer my thanks for the support on the nom, now that it is a CA. :) -- Riffsyphon1024 03:09, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
        • My understanding is that a stats, used in a properly cited note and limited to select items and not a full stat block, should be solidly fair use and not a copyright violation. As for their use in canon, while the die codes themselves have no meaning in and of themselves, Leland Chee has said that "They can serve to provide a scale from which to compare how one character or piece of technology stacks up against another," which is exactly how they are used here. jSarek 07:52, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
          • Thanks for clearing this up jSarek, my apologies for the inconvenience.--Exiled Jedi 20px (Greetings) 22:01, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
            • Not a problem. For the record, I don't think you misread the rule; I think it's just poorly written. We probably ought to see about clearing that up at some point. jSarek 22:27, August 10, 2011 (UTC)

Talk pages?

Hi Starfleet Academy here.

It is a joke really on my profile page, because I am an admin on Locomotive Wiki with only 60-odd pages. I am here because I see that your talk page layout is different than others. I would be happy for just a link to the talk page help, since the only page on this subject I found is different again. I'm only asking because I got in a little trouble on Memory Alpha over talk page layouts.--Starfleet Academy (live long and prosper) 06:47, August 14, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but you have just replied with a dot point. This is a policy, isn't it? The link you referred to is the one I found. Just a thought; could you or other admins make a page on Wookieepedia about talk page policy and put it into the welcome template as a 'useful link'? Anyway I still have no clue to what to do on Wookieepedia talk pages, I guess I will just watch and learn. My point is that I am replying with a guess that the originator for a thread replies against the margin always, and don't know any different. How does everyone else know how to use the Wookieepedia talk pages?  :) --Starfleet Academy (live long and prosper) 09:14, August 14, 2011 (UTC)

  • Hmm, that's a good question. Considering this could go two ways, I'll try to answer them both. First, in regards to overall behavior on talk pages, that is covered by existing Site Policies (i.e. the three-revert rule, no personal attacks, equality, and vandalism to name a few) and extends to the remainder of the wiki. I believe the reason for not having a specific Talk Page policy was just that enforcement of the talk pages didn't need additional policing beyond the existing Policies. However, Wookieepedia:Dispute resolution involves the use of a talk page on Wookieepedia in order to settle a dispute on an article. In regards to actual instruction on how to create a section, ask a question, and sign your name, those steps are available through Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines, of which Wookieepedia is largely based off of. I hope this sheds a little more light onto things for you. -- Riffsyphon1024 09:40, August 14, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the links and your time. I was more interested in the layout since I already try to stay calm and collected on talk pages.
