- "So, that Star Destroyer parked itself over a dormant volcano. Brilliant move."
- ―Wedge Antilles
The Ultima II was an Imperial-class Star Destroyer of the Galactic Empire that served under the command of Admiral Kalaxo. The Ultima II was involved in a battle against the Alliance to Restore the Republic during which it was destroyed.[1]
Description
- "They want us to attack the planet? At a spot that will expose us to every weapon that Star Destroyer has? We'd have no room to maneuver. We'd be cooked."
- ―Freyta Smyth
History
Assault on Ab Dalis
- "We don't have the firepower to take down a Star' Destroyer, Wedge"
- ―Mart Mattin, to Wedge Antilles
During the Galactic Civil War, the Ultima II served in the Imperial Navy under the command of Admiral Kalaxo. In 3 ABY, the Rebel Alliance's fleet had split into divisions and was hunted by the Galactic Empire. The Alliance subsequently initiated Operation Starlight to reunite the scattered fleet, despite being hunted by Imperial Commander Ellian Zahra's Hunter Fleet, of which the Ultima II was part. That year, the Ultima II was stationed at the Outer Rim Territories planet Ab Dalis, where it laid siege to the rebel Colonel Chouch's Eleventh Division, who faced total destruction. The Star Destroyer fired its turbolasers at the rebels, who were protected under a deflector shield. The rebels tried to launch two transports through the shield, but they were destroyed by the Ultima II.
Outside of the shield, All Terrain Armored Transports, TX-225 Occupier tanks, and stormtroopers exchanged fire with rebel infantry.[1]
The battle was discovered on a recon mission by rebel Starlight Squadron, consisting of one RZ-1 A-wing interceptor, piloted by L'ulo L'ampar, and six T-65 X-wing starfighters, piloted by Wedge Antilles, Luke Skywalker, Evaan Verlaine, Freyta Smyth, and Mart Mattin, and another pilot. The Eleventh Division contacted the squadron, who moved to assist in the fight.
A volcanic end
- "I think we'd be flying directly at the Imperial battleship with a thousand TIEs on our tail to attack a target we haven't been fully briefed on for a reason we don't understand."
"Right. so are we going to do it?"
"Ugh." - ―L'ulo L'ampar and Wedge Antilles
On the Ultima II's bridge, Lieutenant Bonnard informed Kalaxo of the seven approaching starfighters and that preliminary scans suggested the group was a special missions crew that had been described by Commander Zahra in her last briefing. Suspecting the group was an advance scouting party for a larger rebel force, Bonnard asked whether the commander should be informed. Kalaxo declined, citing that the battle was going well and that a small group of fighters could not change that outcome, so the only reason to contact Zahra was to inform her of an Imperial victory. The admiral then ordered that a fighter wing intercept the rebel squadron and that ground assault continue.[1]

The preview was released on July 21, 2021 on StarWars.com.[5] The Star Destroyer then appeared in the comic itself, which was written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Ramon Rosanas,[1] and released on July 28 of the same year.[6]
An Imperial I-class Star Destroyer named Ultima existed within the Star Wars Legends continuity.[7] It first appeared in Graveyard of Alderaan, a 1991 adventure supplement written by Bill Slavicsek for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game from West End Games.[8]
