- "They've found a path through the maw. That's been a goal for—what, decades?"
"More like centuries. Since a star went nebula and disrupted the old routes." - ―Qui-Gon Jinn and Kirames Kaj
A star was located in the Inner Rim Territories[1] and the Interior,[2] situated in grid square L-8 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[3] It exploded centuries prior to[1] 40 BBY.[4] As a result, the Byrnum Maw nebula was formed and the hyperspace routes in the surrounding region of space, including the pathways leading to the Pijal system, were disrupted. Over time, the formation of the nebula heavily affected the economic prosperity of worlds consequently cut off from hyperspace traffic.[1] In 40 BBY,[4] Republic Supreme Chancellor Kirames Kaj recounted the nebula's formation due to the star's explosion to the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, while briefing them on their upcoming mission to the planet Pijal.[1]
