"The mining outpost described it as "utter blackness"– the kind where a man taking a step forward doesn't know whether his boot will sink forever into nothing."
―Qui-Gon Jinn[1]

A mining outpost was established by a Mining corporation on the brighter side of the tidally locked second moon of the planet Codia I to mine diamonds. The facility contained a barracks and a medical center and was powered by a power core primarily made of solid accelerite.[1]

Between 41 BBY and 32 BBY[2] a group of thieves attempted a heist at the outpost to steal a shipment of diamonds. As part of the heist they knocked out the outpost's power by destroying the power core's fuel rod with a non-incendiary photonic charge; however, the photonic burst interacted with the accelerite and produced unusual radioactivity that suppressed the entire visible light spectrum in and around the outpost, plunging the area into darkness. The radiation also drove the Defel miner Rosack Denahst into a frenzy as his species were especially sensitive to light.[1]

Most of the outpost's miners escaped to the barracks, but six were murdered by the thieves, atleast five of whom were then slaughtered by Denahst. The outpost sent out a communication about its circumstances and the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi were sent to investigate, donning modified macrobinoculars so that they could see. The pair encountered a surviving thief and the outpost supervisor and pieced together what had happened, coming under attack from the frenzied Defel. Ultimately, Kenobi and the supervisor repaired the power core and restored the outpost's power, nullifying the radiation and restoring Denahst's sanity in the process.[1]

  2. In the flashbacks seen in Obi-Wan 2, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn go on a mission. Padawan depicts Kenobi's first mission, and since Obi-Wan 2 depicts a different mission, it must take place after. As Jinn is still alive in the flashback, it must take place before his death. As Star Wars: Timelines dates the novel to 41 BBY and Jinn's death to 32 BBY, the flashback must take place between those two years.
