- "Even tidally locked, the moon's dark side would receive planetshine from Codia I. See?"
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Qui-Gon Jinn
Codia I was a Mid Rim Territories planet. It was orbited by two moons, the Codian Moon and another one that was tidally locked to the planet's star. Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi at one point mentioned Codia I in his journals, and it was also noted on a galactic map included in the book Traveler's Guide to Batuu.
Description
- "Codia I had two moons—one moss-covered, forested under starlight. […] The second moon was a "phoenix world," possessing a vast ocean on its darker side, but with a rockier surface facing the Codian star."
- ―The journals of Obi-Wan Kenobi
Codia I,[1] also referred to simply as Codia,[4] was a planet located in the Mid Rim Territories' Codia system[1] within grid square H-15 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[2] It occupied the first orbital position around the Codian dwarf star[1] and shared its name with the location known as New Codia.[5] The planet itself was circled by two moons, the forest- and moss-covered[1] Codian Moon[3] and another moon, which was tidally locked to Codia I's star. The darker side of that natural satellite was nevertheless illuminated by planetshine.[1]
History
When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, visited the Codia system while on a mission to Codia I's second moon[1] at some point between 41 BBY and 32 BBY,[6] Kenobi pointed out to Jinn how Codia's second moon was illuminated by the planet.[1] Around 1 BBY,[7] Kenobi also briefly mentioned Codia I in his journals,[1] and at some point, the historian Eloc Throno also noted the location of the planet on a map of the galaxy included in his book Traveler's Guide to Batuu.[4]
Behind the scenes
Codia was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon on a galactic map in Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game, a 2016 Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars Roleplaying boxed set.[2] It was first established as a planet in Cole Horton's 2020 reference book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu.[4] The second issue of the Star Wars: Obi-Wan comic book series, written by Christopher Cantwell and published by Marvel Comics[1] on June 29, 2022,[8] first identified the planet as Codia I.[1]

- ↑ In the flashbacks seen in Obi-Wan 2, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn go on a mission. Padawan depicts Kenobi's first mission, and since Obi-Wan 2 depicts a different mission, it must take place afterward. As Jinn is still alive in the flashback, it must take place before his death, and since Star Wars: Timelines dates the novel to 41 BBY and Jinn's death to 32 BBY, the flashback must take place between those two years.
- ↑ The frame story from Obi-Wan 2 occurs around 1 BBY per the reasoning here.
