- "Your Highness thinks me bold and finds me amusing. Yet in truth I hold the key to his very downfall, and he would be wise to pay me heed."
- ―The mask wearer, to the king
A male individual was, according to legend, the owner and wearer of a mask, operating long prior to[2] the year 29 ABY.[1] The mask wearer sought immense power and influence, manipulating powerful individuals in order to do so. He blackmailed a king into giving him a title and land and poisoned a politician to take her role. However, the mask wearer's power gained the envy of those around him, and a former ally betrayed and killed him, stealing the mask. The mask, said to be cursed, eventually came to be owned by the Ithorian collector Dok-Ondar. The collector sold the mask to the ambassador Slokin, who, upon wearing it, was granted visions of the mask wearer's exploits. Slokin used the mask wearer's strategy to gain power for himself, but was eventually killed in a similar way to the original owner.[2]

Notes and references
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 "Buyer Beware" establishes that the mask wearer died long before events of the story, during which the First Order is publicly known to the galaxy. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary dates the public formation of the First Order to five years after the Starkiller Incident, dated to 34 ABY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. As such, the First Order must have been publicly formed in 29 ABY, and the mask wearer must have died long before that year.
