[R2-D2 beeps]
"Stroke its belly and it will fall asleep? Must I?"
―R2-D2 and C-3PO[1]

A giant non-sentient serpent lived on a terrestrial planet. When lifting its upper body vertically, it could reach the height of[1] a 1.7-meters-tall 3PO-series protocol droid.[2] The snake was covered in red scales, and it had a row of crests running along the top of its body. It had yellow eyes and a red-colored split tongue. When the creature's belly was stroked it would fall asleep.[1]

At one point, the protocol droid C-3PO and the astromech droid R2-D2 visited the planet inhabited by the giant serpent. The two droids undertook a trip to try and locate a source of space crystals needed for their starship; however, one of the serpents blocked their way on a narrow mountain pass. While the creature observed the pair with its body raised upward, R2-D2 informed C-3PO how to make it fall asleep. Initially hesitant, the protocol droid ultimately put the serpent asleep, after which the droid pair continued on their journey.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Are you brave enough to stroke the serpent's belly?"
Shiny as a Droid, addressing the reader[1]

The serpent appeared in Shiny as a Droid, a 1986 children's book written by Virginia Holt and illustrated by Feito. The serpent's belly is one of the interactive elements in the book that the reader can scratch.[1]
