- "You of the future… hear me well. The designs of the Dark Lords have come to pass. The two amulets are joined. The time is upon you."
- ―Marka Ragnos, to Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma
In 3997 BBY,[4] a group of Sith spirits[1] of ancient Dark Lords of the Sith[2] led by Marka Ragnos[4] were summoned from the grave by Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma with the help of a pair of Sith amulets as part of an ancient prophecy.[5] Awakened once again, the spirits instructed them in the dark side of the Force.[2] Ragnos' spirit crowned Exar Kun as the new Dark Lord of the Sith, his initiation into the dark side complete—with a single touch, Ragnos burned[5] a mark of a Dark Lord[6] into the center of Kun's forehead,[5] and Qel-Droma with that of a Shadow Hand,[6] whom Ragnos said would become Kun's first and foremost apprentice, all in an attempt to restore the lost Sith Empire of a thousand years prior.[5] The Great Sith War devastated the galaxy once again, but the Sith Empire was not restored.[7]
The Jedi historian Gnost-Dural mentioned the group centuries later when he researched Qel-Droma, Kun, and the Great Sith War as part of a timeline of galactic history. He speculated that the fact that they supported Exar Kun suggested that they did not support the Sith Emperor.[8]
Behind the scenes
The Sith group, albeit unnamed, first appeared in the sixth issue of Dark Lords of the Sith story arc of the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi series of comic books, written by Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson, penciled by Art Wetherell,[5] and published on March 14, 1995.[9]
While Dark Lords of the Sith 6 established the image of the Dark Lords as a message carried through centuries from the time of the Post–Great Hyperspace War counterinvasion,[5] multiple sources established that they were Sith spirits.[1][10][11][6][2][12][13] This article assumes the latter sources are correct.
In Dark Lords of the Sith 6,[5] the character who would later be identified as Marka Ragnos[4] is surrounded by ships flying as if in combat and says, "In my time, even as the Galactic Republic battles us to extinction." Furthermore, the comic's narration describes him as "the reigning Dark Lord of the Sith" during "a time when the Sith people were being driven to extinction by the Jedi Knights and the armies of the Galactic Republic."[5] However, Tales of the Jedi – The Golden Age of the Sith 2 begins with Marka Ragnos having died before the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire discover each other.[14]
