An unidentified species had once inhabited the planet Rhand in the ancient past. After the original inhabitants of Rhand mysteriously disappeared, the structures that they had constructed fell into ruin. Millennia later the Knell of Muspilli, Kanzer Exiles, and Warriors of Shadow merged their belief systems in the Nihil Retreat with the greatest of their sorcerers taking up residence in the central ruins on Rhand. These sorcerers would come to be known as the Sorcerers of Rhand.
