An R5 series astromech droid served as part of the Rebel Alliance during its war against the Galactic Empire.[1] By 0 ABY,[2] the droid was onboard the Alliance Fleet and told the protocol droid C-3PO that the Alliance Records Office on[1] the Outer Rim[3] astronomical object Fusai was looking for protocol droid staff.[1] That year,[2] after an attack on the Rebel Alliance's Sunspot Prison, C-3PO informed the astromech R2-D2 that[1] he[4] intended to request a transfer to work at the records office as he considered the work there more suitable and safer, recalling what the R5 unit had told him about the office looking for protocol droid staff.[1]

The R5 series astromech droid was mentioned in the nineteenth issue of the 2015 comic series Star Wars. The issue was written by Jason Aaron and published by Marvel Comics[1] on May 25, 2016.[5]
